With just one game remaining in District 10-5A play for each of the six teams, the final Tuesday of the regular season is important for its two schools that reside in McKinney.
Plano East had already locked up the district championship while Allen and Plano West are locked in as the second and third seeds in the district, respectively. And since Plano was eliminated from contention last Friday night after a home loss to McKinney, only MHS and McKinney Boyd can claim the fourth and final playoff spot out of 10-5A.
The Broncos have the easiest path to the playoffs after defeating the Lions 61-45 on Feb. 5 and following up with an impressive 49-47 victory at home versus Plano West. Now Boyd must travel to Plano (1-8), whom the Broncos defeated 58-51 in the first meeting back on Jan. 25 at Boyd.
With a win over the Wildcats, Boyd is in the postseason for the first time in program history. Easy enough, right?
On the other side of Plano, the Lions will be paying a visit to the district champion Plano East Panthers in the season finale. The Panthers crushed the Lions 82-53 in the first meeting on Jan. 25 at MHS, the most lopsided loss this season by McKinney.
If the Lions can pull off the upset on the road, they would not automatically force a one-game playoff for fourth place. McKinney must beat Plano East and have Plano defeat Boyd in order to force a tiebreaker situation, and if not the Lions season will end abruptly on late Tuesday night.
Below are the current standings in 10-5A, heading into Tuesday night:
1. Plano East – y 9-0
2. Allen – x 7-2
3. Plano West – x 5-4
4. Boyd 3-6
5. McKinney 2-7
6. Plano – E 1-8
y – Clinched District
x – Clinched Playoff Berth
E – Eliminated
