Weekend Buzz: Second Saturday, Performing Arts and More

weekend 080913Tax Free Weekend in Texas presents many options around McKinney while you’re out spending your hard-earned cash.

Second Saturday (Saturday): Enjoy an evening of art, music, food and spirits the second Saturday of each month in Downtown McKinney. Guests can explore local art galleries, listen to great local and regional talent and taste some of the area’s best eateries. Many establishments in Downtown McKinney will keep their doors open from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Art exhibits and live entertainment options are found below in their respective sections.

Seussical Jr. (Friday-Saturday): In this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, Seussical Jr.. lovingly brings to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, and more. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. Production of McKinney Youth Theatre summer program students. Aesop’s Oh So Slightly Updated Fables (All Weekend): McKinney Repertory Theatre’s Young Actors Guild presents a play designed for young audiences. This short play, performed for and with kids, weaves some of Aesop’s most famous fables into a fun, fast-paced show. Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday 2:30 & 7:30 p.m., and Sunday 7:30 p.m.

Second Saturday Art: Downtown galleries feature these artists during Meet-the-Artists receptions on Saturday from 7-10 p.m.:

Garret Gallery: Award-winning watercolor artist Linda Bauer. 111 E. Virginia; 972-548-9361.
Imaging on the Square: Various local artists specializing in different mediums. 109 S. Tennessee; 972-548-7575.
Orisons Fine Art & Framing: Guest voting in the 2nd Annual Group Photography Show culminates at Second Saturday. Last year’s winning photographer Jeremy Woodhouse will offer short presentations of his photos from recent travels in Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Japan and Cuba. Until Saturday, guests are invited to visit Orisons to vote for their favorite photographs. Also visit local artists’ work in the upstairs gallery area.110 E. Louisiana; 972-529-1441.
