On Friday, September 23rd, Laura Moore Fine Art Studios invites all to put your 2 feet in and walk a mile. Using donations from the community and with the assistance of community volunteers, Moore will construct a street labyrinth built entirely out of cleaning products. All products will be donated to The Samaritan Inn, Collin County’s only homeless shelter, to be used at the shelter and by graduate residents of the program who are tenants at the Gateway Apartment Complex.
The Walk A Mile interactive art installation will be open to the public during historic downtown McKinney’s Oktoberfest celebration, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23rd, and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24th. It will be located in front of Laura Moore Fine Art Studios at 107 S. Tennessee St.
“This year’s labyrinth will be built out of cleaning products in plastic bottles,” says Moore, “I am trying to build a weather-proof labyrinth, and so, no paper products will be used. What we will need are products in plastic bottles, like, Tide, glass cleaners, dish washing liquid, shower cleaners or any other cleaners.”
Moore launched the Walk a Mile campaign at last year’s Oktoberfest, when with the help of over 40 volunteers (not including those who donated shoes), she built a 40’ shoe labyrinth with 500 pairs of shoes. All shoes were donated to The Samaritan Inn at the conclusion of Oktoberfest.
The community is invited to participate in the Walk a Mile campaign, by donating cleaning products at Laura Moore Fine Art Studios or anywhere you see the Walk a Mile poster displayed. Additionally, community members are invited to put your two feet in and walk a mile by donating $20.00. “$20.00 will purchase 2 feet of the labyrinth,” says Moore.
Those interested in helping with the labyrinth build are asked to report to Laura Moore Fine Art Studios at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23rd. Numerous other volunteer opportunities are also available.
