The McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) and TownSquareBuzz.com have teamed up again to showcase local and regional singing talent in the Second Annual McKinney MASH UP, a vocal competition and fund-raiser where vocalists compete for $2,500 and open for headliner country duo, Steel Magnolia. This year’s MASH UP is presented by Nissan of McKinney, featuring the Nissan LEAF.
“We have so much impressive vocal talent in McKinney and all of North Texas,” said Ty Lake, Director of MPAC. “I am excited to showcase these singers in front of the community while raising funds for MPAC.”
The competition began on September 4, and vocalists have until October 15 to submit a performance audition video to the Mash Up contest website, accessible through MPAC’s website, TownSquareBuzz.com, or NissanOfMcKinney.com. Contestants may enter as a solo performer or group performer.
Angie Bado, owner and founder of TownSquareBuzz.com said, “I was very impressed with the talent who made it through during last year’s inaugural Mash Up competition that we just had to bring it back for a second year. TownSquareBuzz.com is committed to serving our community in any way we can, and this fund-raising project supporting the arts is an opportunity to give back.”
The public is invited to attend a series of Mash Up performances on Saturday, November 3. Semifinalists will perform in the afternoon, and the audience will select the top 20 to advance to the finale that evening. Finale winners, selected by a panel of three judges, will open for Steel Magnolia (winners of CMT’s ‘Can You Duet’) concert on Thursday, November 29 at 8 p.m.
At these events, presenting sponsor Nissan of McKinney will showcase the Nissan LEAF. The Nissan LEAF is 100% electric and was named the 2011 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show.
“Nissan of McKinney is excited to have a chance to fulfill the dreams of others and the McKinney Mash Up is a perfect fit to do so,” said Vince Ferrara, General Manager, Nissan of McKinney. “This is a dynamic medium to showcasing talent and share information with our community about the 100% electric Nissan LEAF.”
Steel Magnolia (watch video below) is the country duo Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott Jones. Winners of CMT’s ‘Can You Duet,’ the pair has received critical acclaim for their unique sound and style. Even before the release of their debut album, Steel Magnolia snagged nine major industry award nominations, including: Vocal Duo of the Year and Top New Vocal Duo of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in both 2010 and 2011, Top Vocal Duo by the The Country Music Association in 2010, Best Country Music Video By A New Duo by Country Music Television and a 2012 ACM Award for Vocal Duo of the Year. Their second single, “Just By Being You (Halo and Wings),” became their second Top 30 hit. Their third single “Last Night Again” reached No. 24 on the country charts. Their self-titled album was released in January 2011 and it debuted in the Top 10 of the pop and country album charts, entering the charts at No. 7 and No. 3, respectively
Tickets for Steel Magnolia are $30 general admission and available through MPAC’s Emerson Ticket Office at 214-544-4630 or online at www.mckinneyperformingartscenter.org.
