Volunteer McKinney Center has several current ways to get involved in helping others.
–McKinney Oktoberfest. The annual Oktoberfest in Historic Downtown McKinney will be held September 23 and 24, 2011. Volunteers are needed to
help welcome families and friends to this popular, family-friendly event. Guests
can enjoy authentic German food and drink, and interactive activities are available
for kids. Volunteers can help with children’s areas, trash collection, greeting
guests, and other hospitality duties. If you are able to stand for long periods of
time and would like to help make this event successful, you can find additional
information on the VMC web site. Click on “McKinney Oktoberfest” under New
–Stock the Pantry. Emily’s Place provides transitional housing for women and
children who have been victims of domestic violence. Food items are needed
to help feed the women and children who live at Emily’s place while they strive
for self-sufficiency. This is a great project for a small group since the pantry is
about the size of a regular home pantry. If your group is interested in this or other
volunteer opportunities at Emily’s Place, use keywords, Emily’s Place, on the
VMC web site.
–VITAS Innovative Hospice Care is seeking caring volunteers to help terminally
ill patients and their families. Possible volunteer activities include friendly visits, running errands, driving to appointments, telephoning support, or giving the caregiver a break. Time and dates are flexible and training is provided. Your
compassion can make a big difference to the patients and their families. For
contact information, look for “Hospice Patient Care Volunteer” under New
Listings on the VMC web site.
