Volunteer McKinney Center has listed the following opportunities this week:
Front Desk. Visiting Nurse Association provides medical care and emotionalsupport for terminally ill patients and their families. With budget cuts, theyno longer have a receptionist at their office and are seeking volunteers to greet
people, signs for shipments, and various other duties. Volunteers need not answerthe phone and may even bring books to read when not busy. Minimum age is 18and hours are scheduled during weekdays. For more information, look for “GateKeeper – Front Office” on the VMC web site.
Adoptive/Foster Family Support. Embrace is a non-profit organizationdedicated to encouraging foster/adoptive families. Currently, volunteers canmake a big difference in several ways: 1) Scholarships and donations are needed
to help foster families pay for extras such as pre-school tuition, participation insports, music lessons, uniforms, etc. Donors may remain anonymous or may wantto connect with the foster family and child. 2) For those who would like to helpolder foster children, Apartment Kits are needed for those who “age out” of fostercare. These kits provide things they will need for their first dorm or apartment, from linens to cleaning supplies. This is a great opportunity for businesses, churches, youth groups, and families to consider. For more information, goto www.simplestofgifts.com.” 3) Embrace offers classes and workshops forfoster/adoptive families. Volunteers are needed to help with on-site childcareduring these classes. Activities are already prepared so all the volunteer needsto do is show up and have fun. Even if you don’t feel you can be a foster oradoptive parent, you can make a difference in the life of these families. Usekeyword, “Embrace” on the VMC web site for additional details on all three ofthese opportunities.
