Volunteer McKinney Center offers two great opportunities to get involved in your community this week:
• Litter Cleanup. Your group can be involved in keeping our local rivers, creeks and lakes pollution free. McKinney’s Storm Water Management Program (SWMP) provides supplies to support the clean-up effort and will help you choose a site. All you need to do is get a group together and choose a day to do the clean-up. Students can earn community service hours and all types of organizations and individuals are encouraged to help make a difference. For additional information, look for “XStream Cleanup” on the Volunteer Center web site.
• Keep History Alive. Chestnut Square is a Historic Village located near downtown McKinney comprised of seven buildings used to demonstrate life of the early settlers in McKinney. Volunteers are crucial to the preservation and maintenance of this Village. Currently, a volunteer is needed to water the potted plants and garden areas around the building once a week. There is also a need for photographers to capture living history
presentations, the local farmers market, special events and other activities involving volunteers, staff, and visitors. Volunteers who enjoy sharing their love of history are encouraged to join Chestnut Square as a tour guide. A two-hour training session and shadowing an experienced docent will prepare you for this important function. To obtain additional information about any of these positions, use keywords, “Chestnut Square” on the Volunteer Center web site.
