If you want to get involved in your community, Volunteer McKinney offers several ways this week:
• Homeless Count. Join with other volunteers on the night of January 24 for the Point-in-Time Count 2013 to look for people who are experiencing homelessness. Volunteers will survey the people they find and give them a care package donated by Collin County organizations. This is a great group activity. Some of the Counts involve hiking, some moderate walking, and some driving only. Several Collin County cities are in need of volunteers. For additional information, look for “2nd Annual McKinney Homeless Count” on the Volunteer
McKinney web site.
• Therapeutic Horsemanship. ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is a center where people with disabilities can come for the purpose of improving their quality of life. They team with the horses, community volunteers
and professional instructors to focus on equestrian skill development and progression while improving the rider’s physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social skills. We are seeking volunteers to join us for our Winter Session January 25 – April 13 . We ask that our volunteers attend training so they are well equipped to assist in our lessons. The next volunteer training is Saturday January 12 8;30am-12-00pm at ManeGait 3160 N. Custer Rd. McKinney, TX 75071. Please RSVP to Sarah Dobbins firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to attend or to inquire about other training times. This is a wonderful way for students to earn their community service hours and a great opportunity for anyone to improve the lives of others. The minimum age is 14 and it is not
necessary to have prior horse experience. For additional information about volunteering at ManeGait, use Keyword “ManeGait” on the Volunteer McKinney web site.
• History Docents. Chestnut Square Historical Village communicates the history of Collin County through regularly scheduled guided tours and tours for school children and other groups. Volunteers who enjoy sharing their love of history are encouraged to join Chestnut Square as a tour guide/docent. A two-hour training session and shadowing an experienced docent will prepare you for this important function. For more information, look for “Tour Guides and Docents” on Volunteer McKinney.
