Rebounding from a disappointing opening performance Monday night against Frisco Wakeland, the McKinney North volleyball team trounced the Carrollton Ranchview Wolves in three sets Friday night at McKinney North High School.
“I think what was great tonight was that everybody got a piece of that win, and everybody took the court and was focused and ready to go,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Shannon Alvarado said.
The Lady Bulldogs controlled the contest from the opening whistle, attacking the net and forcing the issue on the Ranchview defenders.
North jumped out to a commanding 15-4 lead in the first set, and would eventually go on to take the set 25-6.
The second set saw more of the same from the Lady Bulldogs, whose strong defense, especially from Darby Maclea and her eight digs on the night, helped propel them to a 25-7 win in the second set.
Alvarado said her team came out Friday with great intensity, and after its poor performance Monday, it was good to see “we can just put whoever we need to out there and take care of it.”
North compiled 29 kills on the night, and were led by Melissa Nichols with six, who also had two of the teams three blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs were strong offensively, also, smashing 17 aces Friday night. Kristi Carter led the team with four, while Lindsay Denne and Maclea each had three.
North finished off Carrollton Ranchview in the third set, 25-16.
Despite her team’s strong performance, Alvarado said her squad is still trying to decide who the leader on the team is and what its court presence is.
North’s team has a good balance of experience and youth, and Alvarado noted she is looking to each of her seven seniors to “take the next step” while the younger players continue to prove themselves on the court.
“We’re looking to have them use their experience,” she said.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to the court Tuesday when they travel to take on Carrollton Newman Smith. North will return home Sep. 13 to take on Denison High School at 5:30 p.m.
