Lady Broncos head coach Kelly Arbabi said although her team is young – starting two sophomores and a freshman Tuesday night – she was pleased with how her team played against tough competition at Boyd.
Arbabi, whose maiden name was Quinn, is in her eighth year at the helm. She is the only varsity volleyball coach Boyd has had since opening in 2006. She said facing quality opponents early on in the season will help build experience as the season progresses.
Boyd was able to handle Lake Highlands in straight sets to start the evening, defeating the Lady Wildcats by scores of 25-8, 25-7 and 25-15.
The nightcap against 4A power Lovejoy was a tight contest, with both teams trading blows until the Lady Broncos took the match in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18).
Arbabi said while she liked how her team continued to be aggressive when the ball was away from the net, she wants to see less unforced errors as the season progresses. The solution, she said, is simple, adding that, “We control that.”
After taking the first set against Lovejoy 25-22, Boyd fell in an early 8-4 hole to start the second set.
The Lady Broncos were able to rally towards the end of the match, narrowing the gap to 24-21, but Lovejoy was able to finish off Boyd by a score of 25-23.
The third set was another close affair, with the largest lead either team had was three points, which was when Boyd won the set 25-22.
The fourth and final set was Boyd’s from the onset. The Lady Broncos stormed out to an early 9-3 lead and didn’t look back, keeping the pedal down and defeating Lovejoy 25-18.
Lady Bronco defenders played strong defense throughout the night. Junior Montano Watts and sophomore Morgen Miles tallied 22 and 11 digs respectively.
Junior Katelyn Bryant chipped in with nine digs during the match. The Lady Broncos accumulated 80 digs during the match.
Sophomore Jill Duffin and senior Baylee Bingaman both recorded six blocks during the match.
The Lady Broncos will back on the court Friday and Saturday when they compete in the Duncanville Tournament at Duncanville High School. Boyd will return to McKinney Aug. 27 to take on Bishop Lynch.
