Volleyball Scoreboard: Defending State Champs in 5A and 3A Knock off MISD Teams

By TSB Staff, Community Contribution

Two defending state champions took down MISD volleyball teams Tuesday night, with 5A Coppell toppling McKinney Boyd and 3A Lovejoy beating McKinney North.

McKinney Boyd

The McKinney Boyd Lady Broncos fell to the Coppell Cowgirls on the road Tuesday night by a score of 3-0. This was the first match the two teams had played against one another since last year’s 5A state championship, which Coppell won as well. The scores on Tuesday night were 20-25, 22-25, and 23-25.

The score does not properly show the tremendous effort the Lady Broncos gave in this match and how close it really was. Middle blocker Emma Meyer put in a great effort at the net, trying, point after point to close the block.  Although she got only 2 blocks for the game, that doesn’t reflect the energy showed by this outstanding hitter. Also on the offense, outside hitter Megan Mollett had 11 kills, making her the leader of the game with middle attacker, Krista Bukavec, close behind with 7 kills. On the defensive end of the game libero Kaley Seaber and Mollett tied in digs with 14.

There were many players who managed to stand out for Boyd, but one stood out among the rest. “Parker Shepherd played well and I was very proud of how she ran the court offensively,” said Boyd coach Kelly Quinn after the match.

Shepherd ran the offense all night, racking up 16 assists on the entire match. Even though a loss is not something any team wants, Quinn has a bright take on what this game really meant and what can be taken besides just an ‘L’ on the record. “We learned a lot about ourselves tonight and our need to play with composure and to continue to fight when the pressure turns up, said Quinn.

The Lady Broncos finished non-district season 22-6 and now begin district play this Friday night at home  versus Plano West. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Boyd.

McKinney North

The McKinney North volleyball program faced defending 3A State Champions, Lovejoy, on Tuesday evening. The Lady Bulldogs fell in three straight sets with scores of 11-25 12-25 13-25. Despite the scores the Bulldogs played great defense and Ali Michalak lead in the dig category for the evening. Viona Vraniqi continued to solidify herself as an offensive threat for North and leading in kills for the night.

The Freshman team was able to beat Lovejoy while the Junior Varsity team played rather well against the Leopards.

Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams will take on Denison on Friday night. Varsity will play the first match at 5:30 p.m. with Junior Varsity to follow.

McKinney High

The Lionettes were idle Tuesday but begin District 10-5A competition Friday night at Plano High. The varsity match begins at 6 p.m.
