MESQUITE – McKinney North’s playoff run ended suddenly and emphatically Thursday, as the Lady Bulldogs were swept out of the 4A Area Round (12-25, 12-25, 8-25) by Waxahachie High School.
Thursday’s loss in the UIL Playoffs at Mesquite Poteet High School ended a 2013 season that saw North earn its first postseason berth since 2008. The Lady Bulldogs had upset Longview Pine Tree in the Bi-District Round earlier this week.
“They played as well as they could have this year,” North head coach Shannon Alvarado said.
North was overmatched at times Thursday night, as Waxahachie came out to huge leads in each of the three sets.
The Lady Indians — No. 12-ranked 4A team in Texas — won District 15-4A with a perfect 14-0 record in district while accumulating a 37-6 overall record. North entered the game as the No. 3 seed in District 13-4A.
Waxahachie will play the winner of Thursday’s Wylie-Lindale matchup in the Regional Quarterfinals next week.
Alvarado said she is very proud of this group of girls, especially the seniors — Maddie Agan, Charmeca Brown, Courtney Kankel, Ali Michalak, Abby Middleton, Melissa Nichols and Mary Valdez — who have been with her since she took over the program three years ago.
“I couldn’t ask for a better group of kids to buy into what our vision was. And they did it, and did it whole heartedly,” she said.
North looks to continue its success it gained in 2013 into 2014, as Alvarado said they have a great core of players returning next year, as well as some players at the JV level that will step up and make their presence heard next year.
Alvarado said the returning players next year will work to “carry on the things the seniors have done for us.”
