Volleyball Playoffs: McKinney Boyd Sweeps Skyline in Bi-District Round, Awaits Naaman Forest

By Audra Paine, TSB Staff

RICHARDSON – Thirty-two volleyball teams in Texas made the 2012 Region II bi-district round. After Tuesday night only half of those team remain to go onto the area round, and one of those squads is McKinney Boyd.

The Lady Broncos (32-7), champions of District 10-5A, swept the Dallas Skyline Lady Raiders, who finished fourth in District 9-5A, 3-0 in front of a packed house at Richardson Berkner on Tuesday night. The scores of the match were 25-10, 25-8, and 25-13.

Boyd will face Garland Naaman Forest in the Area Round on Friday. Naaman Forest beat Tyler Lee 3-2 Tuesday at Terrell High School. Naaman Forest is 29-11 overall and finished second in 11-5A to Rowlett. The Boyd-Naaman Forest game time and location will be determined soon and published here on TSB.

On the defensive side of the court, the Lady Broncos did an outstanding job shutting the Lady Raiders down. Kaley Seaber led the defense with 14 digs in the match, with Haley Dickshat close behind with eight. Megan Mollett and Tori Turck each had four digs as well.

After the match, Boyd head coach Kelly Quinn was very happy about the way her girls played in the program’s first playoff match since losing in the 5A State Championship Game to Coppell last fall.

“The first game we played very crisp,” said Quinn. “We played with our starting lineup, which was good because we got to get ahead so I was able to play different lineups. I got a lot of playing time for my younger kids. Everyone today got playoff experience which is an important thing, I think.”

The girls not only played well on defense but drilled the Lady Raiders with a total of 31 kills. They did a phenomenal job at spreading their offense, which is something Quinn had mentioned was a problem for them in 2011 and may have been the reason they lost in the championship game.

As a part of the offense, Mollett had seven kills, Krista Bucovec had six, Kelly Koop had five, Emma Meyer had four, while Baylee Bingaman and Ashleigh Martin each had three.

“Everyone was great tonight,” said Quinn. “Megan Elkins and Ashleigh Martin in particular though. Ashley has been injured but she did so great. I was really excited for her.”

Since the girls only have a couple days to prepare for their next opponent, there’s only so much time to work on particular things. With two days until their matchup with Naaman Forest, Quinn thinks is most important point of emphasis at this time is communication.

“We need to communicate better,” Quinn said. “Tonight we had a good gym so we didn’t have to communicate very loudly, but the more we progress the louder its going to get. We just need to talk a little more.”

Stay tuned to TSB for the game time and location for Boyd’s area round matchup with Naaman Forest.
