Volleyball Playoffs: Boyd Advances Past Naaman Forest, Sets Up Regional Quarterfinal Match with Plano West

By Audra Paine, TSB Staff

It was quite a week for the McKinney Boyd volleyball team.

Earlier this week, the talented Lady Broncos won their first UIL playoff match against Dallas Skyline, and in Friday’s Area Round match they dispatched Garland Naaman Forest.

In just 64 minutes, Boyd swept the Lady Rangers in a three-set match to advance to next week’s Regional Quarterfinals. The scores of Friday’s match were 25-8, 25-15 and 25-20.

“We looked really good tonight,” said Boyd head coach Kelly Quinn following her team’s quick victory at Plano East High School. “We looked really clean and came out ready to fight.”

All night the Lady Rangers — which finished runnerup in 5A in 2011 — tried to get a point on the scoreboard, but the Lady Broncos were relentless. Block after block, dig after dig, Boyd’s defense worked incredibly hard to earn a total of 56 digs and five blocks. Kaley Seaber led the team with 16 digs, while Kelly Koop had eight digs and Krista Bukovec finished with seven digs of her own.

On the offensive side, Megan Mollett shined all night with a total of 13 kills on the match. The Broncos spread their offense out, drawing in blocks and setting up stacks to draw their opponents. It obviously worked because the girls dominated the court tonight in quick fashion, which really impressed Quinn.

“We looked really crisp tonight,” said Quinn. “I’m really excited about Megan Mollett. She looked great tonight, as did Kelley Koop. Our setter meshed really well tonight. It was a little slower paced game then the last two, but Naaman Forest did a great job. They came a long way and I am proud of the way they played.”

When asked if there was anything they were doing in order to prepare for the next few weeks that will demand a lot of her and the girls, physically and mentally, Quinn said that their district season and work ethic throughout the year has prepared them for this journey.

“Our district is so competitive, we’ve played in long drawn out games all year and have long practices that last longer than a game would. So physically we’re great. I think maybe our mental endurance will be tested, but we’re prepared.”

Boyd will face a familiar foe in the regional quarterfinal in fellow District 10-5A member Plano West. The Lady Wolves defeated Rockwall-Heath 3-1 on Friday night in the area round match. Game time and location will be determined this weekend. Stay tuned to TSB for all of your volleyball playoff information!
