Volleyball Feature: Lady Broncs Dominate Lake Highlands

Lake Highlands played a double-header at the state’s fifth-ranked 5A volleyball team, McKinney Boyd, Tuesday night and the Lady Broncs’ made sure the Lady Wildcats got to face their second opponent of the evening, Rowlett, as soon as possible. In their first home game in three weeks, the Lady Broncos made quick work of Lake Highlands in a dominating clean sweep, 25-13, 25-15, 25-23.

“We came out pretty intense,” head coach Kelly Quinn said.

The night was highlighted by junior Megan Mollett, who seemed to score at will and finished with 15 kills on a .542 hitting percentage. The Lady Broncos hit .372 as a team.

“She’s a great player,” Quinn said. “Right now, we’ve moved her to the outside because she can get more swings that way. I’m really impressed with her passing and defense too.”

Senior Drew Darling also had a standout night adding to the offense with nine kills and led the team with nine defensive digs and two service aces.

Senior Maddie Burleson and junior Mackenzie Wells, Krista Bukovec and Emma Meyer all added to the offense combining for 17 kills.

Leading the offense, senior Brittany Phelan and juniors Brantlee Reid and Jade Marano shared setting responsiblities tallying 40 assists on the night.

Boyd easily dominated the first two games of the night but it was neck and neck for most of the third, as the Lady Wildcats appeared to be pushing for a game four. In the end, the Lady Broncos proved to be too much for Lake Highlands to handle as they improved to an overall record of 23-5 on the year

McKinney Boyd hits the road Friday night to face Allen (8-3) and travels again next Tuesday for a match with Flower Mound. The Lady Broncos next home game is scheduled for Sept 20 in a district showdown with North Garland.
