In my first year as a sports reporter in McKinney, I was assigned to cover all middle school athletics. Now, all those kids I wrote about in my first year have turned into big time playmakers on the varsity level at all three high schools.
I had the privilege of watching a lot of great football players make their middle school debut but none was more impressive than Dowell’s Bryan Driskell. I didn’t hear anything about him prior to attending my assigned seventh-grade football game for that week. I recognized the name Driskell over the loud speaker because I played JV football with his older brother. But I didn’t know what to expect from him as an athlete when I saw him take that first hand off. Let’s just say, I was blown away. If memory serves me correctly, the Lions were playing Highland Park that week and Bryan rushed for about five or six touchdowns as Dowell won by a score of 48-0. He wasn’t any bigger than any of the other kids on the field but when he had the football in his hands it was like watching a high school player running circles around inexperienced middle school kids. I had never seen anything like it before and I didn’t think I ever would again.
Earlier this month, I wrote an column titled ‘5 Burning Questions Heading Into This Fall’ where I discussed some of the major football storylines involving MHS, Boyd, and McKinney North. Two weeks later, a reader posted the following comment on my article.
“A new kid is coming into Boyd 7th grade from Ohio. One of the top players in the state. Better come out and watch this fall. Get ready for a Superstar at Boyd HS in two years.”
Along with the comment, he posted a link to the YouTube channel – DaManColin. I had high expectations as I clicked on the first video and I thought there was no way this sixth-grade kid could live up to his billing as a future superstar without me seeing him in person.
Ladies and gentlemen, you’re more than welcome to watch the videos for yourself but let me be the first (hopefully) reporter in McKinney to tell you that Colin DeBord (#10) is the real deal. Wow! There are 11 videos on his page but after watching just one I got the same feeling as when I first watched Bryan Driskell blow past the HP defense for what seemed like an effortless touchdown run. This kid can flat out play and I’m excited to see what he can bring to Boyd in two years and even more excited to watch him in action this fall.
I will be doing a more in-depth feature on Colin next week so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, I posed my favorite video at the bottom of the screen but do yourself a favor and watch all 11 short clips on his channel. See for yourself and let me know what you think.
The announcer in this clip says it best – “Holy cow”.
