The victims in Thursday evening’s shooting at a McKinney daycare center have been identified by the McKinney Police Department. The female victim is Melissa Williams, 36, from McKinney. According to the McKinney Police Department, Williams was at the Discovery Learning Center, located at 1815 W. White Avenue, picking up her two children when her estranged husband, Cedric McFail, approached Williams’ car and fired shots into her vehicle.
“According to witnesses, a male was arguing with a female in a car, followed by the sound of gunshots,” McKinney Police Department Public Information Officer Sabrina Boston said in a release. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Williams deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
The children were in the vehicle but were not injured. The shooting took place at approximately 5:44 p.m.
After shooting Williams, McFail, 33, then fled the scene to the 2700 block of Frontier Lane. The McKinney Police Department received a call of a shooting from that location at 6:02 p.m. According to the caller, McFail had entered a home, had a brief conversation and then shot himself.
McKinney Police and Fire arrived on the scene and transported McFail to Baylor Medical Center of McKinney, where he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The couple’s children are safe and in the care of Child Protective Services.
“This is an ongoing investigation as detectives are interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence from both crime scenes,” Boston said. “Anyone with information pertaining to these incidents should contact the McKinney Police Department at 972-547-2700.”
