Tuesday Girl’s Basketball Preview: Playoff Scenarios Explained

By: Mike Bruu, TSB Staff

Tuesday night will be a make it or break it night of play in girl’s high school basketball as post-season advancement comes down to the final regular season game for both 10-4A McKinney High and 10-5A McKinney Boyd.

The most complicated scenario potentially exists in district 10-4A. At the moment, the standings look as follows (District record shown):

1. Rockwall            11-2
2. Highland Park    9-4
3. Wylie                  9-4
4. North                  9-4
5. McKinney          8-5

With the top four teams in the district qualifying for postseason play, one team will be left on the outside looking in. As it stands, McKinney High is the team that has the least control over their destiny going into Tuesday night. The Lionettes need a victory at home versus the Highland Park Lady Scots to have a chance to be involved in the potential tie-breaking scenarios that could occur.

While Rockwall has secured the division title, Highland Park, Wylie, and McKinney North can all clinch their spot in the playoffs with a win on Tuesday night. As previously stated, Highland Park travels to McKinney, while the Lady Bulldogs will host Wylie across town. In the first matchups for these four teams, Wylie knocked out North 63-51, while McKinney outlasted Highland Park 68-65. Both McKinney schools were on the road.

Now here is where things get tricky. If McKinney loses, then the drama bottoms out and North, Wylie and Highland Park each move on to the state playoffs. Highland Park would clinch the 2 seed, and the winner of the Wylie-North matchup will finish in 3rd.

However, if McKinney does defeat the Lady Scots Tuesday night, that is when the tiebreaker begins to come into play. The Lionettes would move to 9-5 in district, where Highland Park would fall to 9-5 as well. Now the focus shifts up 75 to McKinney North. The winner of the Wylie-North game, regardless of the outcome at MHS will move onto the playoffs. On the other hand, the loser moves to 9-5 in district and creates a three-way logjam with only two spots left to hold.

UIL rules state that prior to the season, the District Executive Committee is in charge of deciding the methods for a tiebreaker in the case that two or more schools are even in win/loss percentage. If the district does not supply a method, then the UIL will enforce its own tiebreaking procedures, which states that a tournament will be conducted to determine the two teams that move on and their seeds for the playoffs.

While it is unclear at the moment just how District 10-4A has decided to enforce for these situations, it is clear that tonight there will be some intense drama unfolding just miles away from one another. Whether you’re a Bulldog or a Lion, you have to love how everything comes down to the final night of the regular season.

Meanwhile in District 10-5A, the Lady Broncos find themselves holding out hope for a possible playoff berth if they can get a little help along the way. Boyd currently sits at 6-7 in district play, holding firm at the 5 seed in the standings. They are looking up at Garland Lakeview Centennial, who comes into Tuesday night with a record of 7-6.

Both schools have difficult road tests they must pass in order to move on. With a victory against Garland, who is 10-3 in district, Lakeview would eliminate the Lady Broncos and clinch the final spot. However, Boyd still must win on Tuesday night and it won’t come easy when they travel down to 13-0 Sachse, who beat the Lady Broncos by 20 in their first meeting at Boyd.

If Boyd can somehow force a tie at 7-7 they would create the scenario for a one-game playoff between Lakeview and themselves for the fourth and final seed out of District 10-5A.

Tuesday night could be a evening where we could see one, two, or if everything goes the city’s way, all three high schools seeing girl’s basketball postseason action in 2012. Below is a schedule for the evening’s games.
