McKinney High kicked off its second District 10-5A match of the season against the Plano East Lady Panthers on Middle School Night, which saw numerous youngsters spending their night cheering their hardest for a Lionettes victory.
The players decorated balls and threw them in the stands Tuesday night as a sign of appreciation, and then jogged on to shake hands with their opponents. Although MHS made a tremendous comeback after losing the first two sets 18-25 and 22-25, the Lionettes charged past the odds by winning the next two sets 25-13 and 25-17, before eventually losing the fifth set with a grueling 8-15 finish.
Dig after dig, kill after kill, block after block, MHS battled back from their two-set deficit by switching the momentum of play to their own. The girls played as a team last night, one girl not outdoing the other. They played for each other and fought hard as the Lady Panthers pushed back. When questioned about what was said to pump the girls up during the game, MHS head coach Jessica Camp told them to remember the pre-game preparation.
“Well, we already knew their weaknesses,” Camp said. “We knew them going in. We just decided to finally play to their weaknesses and pick it up. I told them they have to play and fight for every point like its 24-24.”
And fight they did.
Nobody enjoys losing, but when you’ve fought back with the odds against you and ome up just short, it is hard on the heart. Although it’s not something you want to have to feel, Camp still has a positive out look for the team moving forward.
“We know that we can play like that, in game three and four, we can play like that every game,” she said. “The girls want it. They have a lot of passion and desire and they tried. They just played well as a team, communicated well and worked hard tonight.”
The loss knocks the Lionettes to 0-2 in District 10-5A play. Plano East improved to 2-0.
Luckily it won’t be long before the Lionettes get a chance to get back out on the floor when they travel to Plano West on Friday night. Game time is 6 p.m.
