TSB’s Volleyball Game of the Week: Boyd Wins Pivotal District Match Over Plano

By Audra Paine, TSB Staff

Red and navy trickled in and filled the stands as the McKinney Boyd Lady Broncos volleyball team ran onto the court Friday night, ready to defeat the Plano Wildcats in one the most highly anticipated matches of the district season.

At the beginning of this week Plano West, Plano, and McKinney Boyd were in a three-way tie for first place in district. The Broncos defeated Plano West on Tuesday 3-1, and if the Lady Broncos pulled out a win versus the Lady Wildcats, they would take over the number one seed in District 10-5A.

After kicking off the night with a shout-out to all the parents that have helped these girls all season as part of Parent Night, the Lady Broncos came out on top 3-1 over Plano, with sets resulting in 25-21, 25-27, 25-22, and 25-14.

The Lady Broncos improved to 6-1 in District 10-5A while Plano fell to 5-2, meaning that Boyd now is up a full game on the Lady Wildcats for the district title.

“We’re technically first in district,” said head coach Kelly Quinn following the match. “Now that we’ve beaten Plano twice, it puts us into first.”

While Boyd played a solid match tonight, there are still things the team is working on improving with three matches remaining in the regular season. The middle attackers continued to draw in the Lady Wildcats block so their team mates could come in for the kill, and not only that but if for some reason the block didn’t close, their defense did a great job at covering those holes.

“Everyone played well tonight but we just need to capitalize on opportunities and free balls,” said Quinn. “We need to be able to put away those balls every time. When you play good teams it exposes your weaknesses. The good thing is now I know where to we need to improve.”

After the win, Quinn talked about some of the players who stood out in the match.

“Haley (Dickschat) played well tonight,” she said. “She stepped in when we were in need of some solid defense. Kaley (Seaber) took the middle even though she was very sick tonight. She did a great job and is a great leader.”

While the Lady Broncos currently are in the driver’s seat for the district title with just three matches remaining, the players know they have to be weary of falling victim to these “trap” games versus Allen, Plano East, and MHS. Staying focused and motivated to keep up this winning streak may prove to be an obstacle in itself.

Boyd will continue its district championship hunt next Tuesday night at Allen. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
