Coming off an 0-10 season in 2011 and entering one of the state’s most difficult districts, there were several questions surrounding the McKinney Lions heading into 2012. In District 10-5A that included McKinney Boyd, all three Plano schools, and the eventual state champion Allen, many thought the Lions would be hard pressed to earn a district victory.
After going 4-1 in non-district play and losing their district opener to Plano, the Lions hosted Plano East on Homecoming night back in mid-October. With running back Tommy Candela returning from injury and quarterback Robert Somborn off to a strong start under center, the Lions beat down the Panther 24-12 to win its first and only District 10-5A game of the season.
The Lions would finish the season 5-5 and miss the playoffs, but the night of October 19 will be remembered for McKinney High fans for years to come.
