TSB’s Football Game of the Week: Boyd Blasts Plano West in District 10-5A Opener

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

Three years ago, McKinney Boyd walked into Clark Stadium in Plano and was soundly defeated 84-40 by the Plano West Wolves.

On Friday night, in front of a red-coated fan section at Ron Poe Stadium, the Broncos were able to get some revenge as they thoroughly whipped the Wolves 55-28 in the District 10-5A opener for both schools.

Boyd improved to 1-0 in district and 4-2 overall, while Plano West fell to 0-1 in district and 3-3 overall.

The game was pretty much decided in the first half, with the Broncos scoring three touchdowns and kicking two field goals to go into the locker room at halftime leading 27-7. Boyd scored in each of its five offensive drives in the first half, two of which were touchdowns by running back Bryan Driskell.

The all-state tailback got the scoring started with a 25-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Curtis Ladd, who finished the game with 134 yards on 12-of-19 passing with two touchdown passes. Driskell would run in another score on the following offensive possession, this time on the ground for four yards.

Driskell finished the evening with 201 yards on 26 carries and four total touchdowns, including a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half. After the game, Boyd head coach Don Drake talked about how important it was for his team to have success on the ground from the very beginning.

“We had to be able to establish the running game, and I thought we did a good job of that tonight,” said Drake. “We did a good job, especially in the first half, of scoring and putting points on the board in every possession of the half. Coming out in the second half, obviously the kickoff returned for a touchdown kind of set the stage as well. I am real proud of the kids and thought they did a great job.”

With the Broncos having such a sizeable lead in the second half, Drake and his coaching staff were able bring some backups into the game and have them get some snaps. No one was more impressive than senior running back Kalvon Howard, who ran for 106 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a 31-yard run right up the middle in which no Wolf defender laid a finger on him.

After racking up 541 total yards and scoring a season-high 55 points in the District 10-5A opener, Drake was very pleased with the performances of all his players, especially Howard and Ladd.

“I thought Kalvon came in and played really well,” he said. “I thought Curtis ran the ball well too and threw the ball well tonight. We were hitting on all cylinders and that’s what we have to do in this district.”

The key to winning games in a district this difficult is to run the ball successfully and win the turnover battle. Boyd won both of those categories on Friday night, running the ball 53 times for 407 yards while winning the turnover battle over Plano West 4-0.

While the game three years ago between these two teams involved only one player from the current Bronco squad, the sense after the game from the players and their fans was relief that they could finally say they had defeated a Plano school in this district.

“I would say its special because it is our first time to go back into that district and compete again,” said Drake. “We have never beaten a Plano school, so for our kids to come out tonight and play the way they did and finish that football game in that fashion, that’s a big moment for us.”

The Broncos will look to go to 2-0 in district play when they travel to Plano’s Clark Field to take on Plano next Friday night. The Wildcats defeated McKinney High 38-21 on Friday to start 1-0 in district. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
