TSB Football Awards: Honoring Our City’s Best in 2012

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Editor

In college football, the Heisman trophy conversations begin in early July before the players even take the field to play their first game. I don’t think there was that kind of talk leading up to the announcement of the first ever TSB football Most Valuable Player Award, but maybe one day it can get there.

If you missed my column last Tuesday while you were away on vacation, I announced the four nominees for the MVP award. McKinney Boyd running back Bryan Driskell, McKinney High quarterback Robert Somborn and wide receiver Connor Fuentes, and McKinney North receiver and defensive back Evan Jones were the four nominees. All of them were important cogs in their team’s overall success.

In order to make this MVP selection as correct as possible, here were the criteria I used to select the winner:

– Top-40 in the area in two or more categories (can be team stats)
– Top two on his team in scoring
– Played in every game this season
– Team did not have to make the postseason

The last note about the postseason is something I always believed should not impact who wins the MVP award. I understand that being the most valuable player in the city of McKinney should mean that your football team made the playoffs, but I don’t believe that has to be the case.

Now before I announce the winner, I have heard from a few people that McKinney’s Red Shannon should have been one of the nominees for the award, and I cannot argue that at all. His 1,429 total offensive yards and 14 touchdowns make him a MVP caliber player without question, but a couple of things had me choose Fuentes over Shannon for the fourth nominee.

While Shannon was a huge part of the Lions offense this season, Fuentes was an offensive weapon that defenses struggled to contain on third downs all season long. Also, his 14.8 yards per reception was actually higher that Jesuit’s Jake Oliver, who is regarded as the best receiver prospect in the state. Fuentes was Somborn’s favorite target when he needed a big first down late in the game, and was a big reason why the Lions passing offense was number two in the area this year.

While all four nominees were very worthy, the decision came down to Driskell and Somborn. For Driskell, his 1,882 rushing yards and 28 total touchdowns were without a doubt the main reason why the Broncos won six games in 2012 and made the playoffs. He accounted for 55% of the team’s points this season, while also setting several school records for Boyd, including surpassing the 5,000 total rushing yards mark for the first time in program history.

For Somborn, he finished top-five in passing yards in the area while throwing for 31 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. He completed his senior season with over 6,500 total passing yards in three years as a starter, including a career 61% completion percentage. Somborn also led a 0-10 football team in 2011 to a .500 record in the team’s first season in District 10-5A, arguably one of the toughest districts in the state. In fact, the Lions were a victory over Boyd away from possibly making the playoffs; something many people in this town said was impossible back in August.

Without further ado, here is the winner of the 2012 TownSquareBuzz Football Most Valuable Player Award:

Boyd running back Bryan Driskell

Driskell’s percentage of his team’s points and having the most rushing yards in the area was what put the Bronco running back ahead of Somborn in the final decision. Congratulations to Bryan Driskell for winning the award and to all the nominees for their great seasons on the football field in 2012.

Here are the other TSB football award winners:

Offensive Player of the Year – Robert Somborn, McKinney

Defensive Player of the Year – Adam Brown, Boyd

Special Teams Player of the Year – Jared Symmank, Boyd

Coach of the Year – Jeff Smith, McKinney
