During this week in our history, among the many events that happened were the national Bill of Rights became official and Collin County was created.
In 1791, the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, took effect following ratification by Virginia.
In 1837, Fannin County was created out of Red River County. Nine years later, Collin County was created from Fannin.
In 1854, the Rock Hill post office, west of McKinney was established. It continued operations until 1904 when residents began receiving mail through the McKinney office.
In 1856, the William Nelson Bush family, another of our pioneers arrived in McKinney.
In 1874, the First Baptist Church of Celina was organized in the Old Union School House in that community. The church has been in several different locations over the years, but stills functions north of Celina on Highway 289.
In 1898, the Plano city council banned the shooting of fireworks on city streets and anew building housing the Plano Presbyterian Church was dedicated. The same year, a post office was established in Clear Lake, a community south of Lake Lavon. It operated until 1942 when residents began receiving their mail through the McKinney office.
In 1900, because of inactivity and the need for funds, the City of Plano began renting the city’s fire horses for personal use.
In 1901, the citizens of Plano voted in favor of prohibition, two decades before it became a federal law.
In 1904, a lamp exploded in the Wynn & Son Restaurant in Wylie and destroyed the business.
In 1907, the Millwood post office was closed and residents began receiving mail through the Royce City office. It had been in operation since 1851.
In 1909, the Lebanon Masonic Lodge #837 moved to Frisco and still functions today.
In 1925, the first motel, the Motel Inn, opened, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
In 1932, the post office in Pike, northeast of Blue Ridge and near the Collin and Hunt County lines, was closed. It had been in existence since 1885.
In 1941, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, which responded in kind.
In 1961, a U.S. aircraft carrier carrying Army helicopters arrived in Saigon, the first direct American military support for South Vietnam’s battle against Communist guerrillas.
