Football fans, feast on back-to-back nights of varsity action at Ron Poe Stadium this Thursday and Friday. Here are previews of this week’s games to get ready.
PLANO EAST (0-1, 4-1) AT MCKINNEY HIGH (0-1, 4-2)
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
Lions Notes: MHS lost at Plano 38-21 on Friday night in the team’s District 10-5A opener… The Lions had a season-low in rushing yards, only rushing for 54 yards on 21 carries. Red Shannon led all rushers with 64 yards on 8 carries… Friday’s game marked the first time the Lions have had two 100-yard receivers in a game, with Shannon catching 9 passes for 116 yards and Connor Fuentes grabbing 10 catches for 110 yards… The Lions failed to score in the first quarter for the second consecutive game, and have not scored a point in just five quarters all season… Quarterback Robert Somborn is fourth in the 5A area in passing with 1,657 yards. He is tied for third in the area with Jesuit’s Jack Brezette in touchdown passes with 21… Fuentes is now fifth in the area in receiving with 604 yards. He is averaging 15.1 yards per catch… The Lions are averaging 6.6 penalties per game for 66 yards… MHS is 1-1 at Ron Poe Stadium this season… This is McKinney’s homecoming game.
Plano East Notes: The Panthers were defeated at home by Allen 56-0 on Friday night in their District 10-5A opener… Plano East was outgained in total yards versus Allen 389-149. The Panthers only gained 46 rushing yards on 38 carries, averaging just 1.21 YPC… The Panthers are 3-0 on the road this season… Starting quarterback Mario Smalls will not play with a broken fibula. Smalls was out last week versus Allen… Taylor McGehee and Justin Wheeler both saw time under center versus Allen. McGehee finished 8-of-14 for 78 yards, while Wheeler finished 2-of-6 for 25 yards and one interception… Plano East dropped from first to ninth in total offense in the 5A area, averaging 461.4 YPG.
Matchup to Watch: The loss of Plano East’s starting quarterback Mario Smalls was expected to cripple the Panthers a little bit, but not one could have expected a 56-0 beat down at home versus a great Allen team last Friday. Regardless of who is under center for the Panthers on Thursday night, the Lions will have the quarterback advantage with Robert Somborn. If MHS can keep the penalties to a minimum and win the turnover battle, the Lions should be able to sling the ball around the field enough to where the Panthers can’t keep up on the scoreboard.
MCKINNEY BOYD (1-0, 4-2) AT PLANO (1-0, 4-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Plano’s Clark Stadium
Broncos Notes: Boyd defeated Plano West in its District 10-5A opener last Friday night 55-28… The Broncos had a season-high in total yards versus Plano West with 541 yards, a week after their previous high of 537 versus at Lewisville… Boyd has run for 840 yards in the past two games on 110 carries, averaging 7.6 YPC… After rushing for 201 yards last week, running back Bryan Driskell now has 1,116 rushing yards on the season. He is now just 33 yards behind South Garland’s Marquel McNac for first in the 5A area. Driskell has 37 less carries than McNac (169 to 132)… Quarterback Curtis Ladd is 39th in the area in passing with 604 yards. He has six touchdowns and two interceptions on the season… Driskell had his fourth career special teams touchdowns versus Plano West on a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half… The Broncos are 2-1 on the road this season… In 2009, Plano defeated Boyd 24-16 at Kimbrough Stadium in district play.
Plano Notes: The Wildcats defeated MHS 38-21 last Friday at home in their District 10-5A opener… Quarterback Richard Lagow surpasses the thousand-yard plateau last Friday. He now has 1,076 yards on 52-of-88 passing, with four touchdowns and five interceptions… Plano is 29th in the 5A area in total offense, averaging 357.3 YPG… The Wildcats are averaging 181.2 YPG through the air… They score 26.5 PPG and allow 22 PPG, both in the top-40 in the 5A area… Plano is 2-1 at home this season… Running back Andre Morman leads the team with 467 yards on 69 carries and four touchdowns. Morman ran for 57 yards on 10 carries versus MHS. Running back Braylan Campbell, who finished with a game-high 113 rushing yards versus MHS, is second on the team with 329 yards on 69 carries… Lagow leads the team in rushing touchdowns with seven, despite having just three rushing yards.
Matchup to Watch: Plano is looking to sweep the McKinney schools at home in back-to-back weeks, something that would give the Wildcats a huge advantage in making the postseason in November. Boyd is coming off an absolute thrashing of Plano West, in which the running game was on point and the passing game made big plays down the field. Boyd quarterback Curtis Ladd had his most sound game throwing the ball, benefitting from his offenses ability to run the football successfully. The play-action game for the Broncos will be critical on Friday night, and putting up 27 points by halftime like they did against Plano West wouldn’t hurt either.
WYLIE (1-2, 1-5) AT MCKINNEY NORTH (1-2, 1-5)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
Bulldogs Notes: North lost on the road at Lovejoy 24-17 last Friday night to drop to 1-2 in District 13-4A play… The Bulldogs are in a four-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot with Denison, Royse City, and Wylie. They are all each at 1-2… North is 1-2 at Ron Poe Stadium this season… Running back Ronald Jones ran for a season-high 113 yards on Friday night versus Lovejoy… The Bulldogs are 0-5 this season versus teams with records of .500 or better… Quarterback Ben Dutze is 27th in the 4A area in passing with 734 yards. He has six touchdowns and nine interceptions this season… North is 31st in the area in passing offense with 128.7 YPG and 39th in the area in rushing with 139.5 YPG… They are scoring 20.2 PPG and allowing 30.2 PPG, both in the top-40 in the area.
Wylie Notes: The Pirates knocked off Greenville 50-7 at home last week to improve to 1-2 in District 13-4A… Wylie lost its first two district games by a combined score of 93-59… Quarterback Carson Cook is 96-of-178 passing for 1,089 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions… Wylie’s leading rusher is Leland Dotson, who has 192 yards on 36 carries and one touchdown. Dontae Slay leads the team in carries with 40 for 174 yards and two touchdowns… The Pirates leading receiver is Kalen Winkler, who has 460 yards and five touchdowns… Wylie is 0-3 on the road this season… The Pirates are scoring 32 PPG and giving up 33.2 PPG.
Matchup to Watch: These are the kind of games that will determine who is the fourth seed to come out of District 13-4A in November. Lovejoy, Sherman, and Wylie East appear to be the class of the district early on, which means that Denison, North, Royse City, Wylie, and Greenville will all be battling for that final spot. The Bulldogs already have the head-to-head over Royse City with their win over the Bulldogs two weeks ago, but another victory Friday night versus a pass-friendly Wylie team would keep them right in the thick of things in the playoff race. Ronald Jones and Justin Jones will continue to be important for the Bulldogs to get going offensively, and if Dutze can put together some solid drives and not turn the ball over, North can find its second win of the season.
MCKINNEY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (3-3) AT COLLEYVILLE COVENANT CHRISTIAN (1-0, 6-0)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bedford’s Pennington Field
Mustangs Notes: This is MCA’s first district game of the season… MCA defeated Rockwall Christian 38-20 last week to improve to 3-3 on the season… MCA is 2-1 on the road this season… Running back Connor Doyle has 898 rushing yards on 113 carries with 14 touchdowns. He also has 296 receiving yards on 15 catches and two touchdowns… Quarterback Dallas Brock is 35-of-61 passing with four touchdowns and three interceptions.
C.C.C. Notes: C.C.C. defeated Gainesville State School 61-0 last week to stay undefeated at 6-0… They have three shutouts as a defense and have allowed a total of 38 points all season in six games… Quarterback Kade Thomas is 71-of-114 passing for 1,205 yards with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions… Running back Michael Kim leads the team in rushing with 231 yards on 25 carries with seven touchdowns… C.C.C. is 2-0 at home this season.
