This Week In Football: Ron Poe Stadium Hosts Two Games in 24 Hours

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

TSB looks at this week’s varsity football games in McKinney:

When: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Ron Poe Stadium, McKinney

Lions Notes: MHS won for the first time since the 2010 season in its season opener, defeating Mansfield Legacy 55-46 on the road. … QB Robert Somborn threw for 246 yards on 16 of 25 passing, with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. RB Tommy Candela and Jonathan Shannon ran for 208 and 143 yard respectively. Candela recorded two touchdowns while Shannon ran for one. WR T.V. Williams and Connor Fuentes each caught two touchdowns. … MHS recorded 625 yards of total offense, including 379 on the ground. However, the Lions allowed 509 total yards to Legacy, but only gave up 135 rushing.

Frisco Heritage Notes: Heritage lost its opener 53-14 to Lovejoy last week. … QB Twayne Blackwell threw for 115 yards on 16 of 29 passing, throwing for two interceptions and zero touchdowns. Blackwell led the team in rushing with 131 yards and scored the teams only two touchdowns on the ground.

Matchup to Watch: Lovejoy jumped out to 34-14 lead versus Heritage at the half, which is good for the Lions who led at Legacy 28-13 at halftime last week. If MHS can get off to a good start and get that high-flying offense into gear from the kickoff, this game could be in hand for the team after 24 minutes.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Coppell High School

Broncos Notes: Boyd lost to Mesquite Horn 38-20 in last week’s opener QB Curtis Ladd (10-18, 86 yards) had one touchdown and zero interceptions. RB Bryan Driskell ran for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns. WR Kevin McCormick caught a 34-yard touchdown. … Mesquite Horn ran for 274 yards versus the Broncos, while Boyd ran for just 158.

Coppell Notes: Coppell opened with a 41-8 win over Longview at SMU’s Ford Stadium. … QB Colby Mahon threw for 287 on 9 of 11 passing, tossing four touchdowns and zero interceptions. RB Gavin McDaniel led the team with 84 yards, while RB Jacob Logan and Charles West recorded a touchdown. WR Cameron Smith caught four passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

Matchup to Watch: Coppell ran for just 123 yards versus Longview last week, but expect to see a heavier dose on the ground with McDaniel, Logan, and West all sharing the load to try and take advantage of a young Bronco defensive line.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Ron Poe Stadium, McKinney

Bulldogs Notes: North lost its season opener at Carrollton Newman Smith 21-17 last week. … QB Ben Dutze threw for 199 yards on 16 of 29 passing, recording two touchdowns and two interceptions. RB Trey Smith led the team with 98 rushing yards on 23 attempts. WR Gabe Constantine and Tre Sanders each caught a touchdown. … The Bulldogs were able to score all of their points in the first half, but were held off the scoreboard in the second half. Just the opposite occurred for Newman Smith: the Trojans were held scoreless in the first 24 minutes, but scored all of their 21 points in the second half, including the game-winning touchdown run by Cole Brewer.

Prosper Notes: Prosper opened with a 39-21 win over Keller. … RB Marquez Houston led the team with 106 rushing yards on 10 attempts, including a touchdown. RB Trent Dillard and Chase Dawkins each ran for a score as well. WR Connor Thompson led the team in receiving with 63 yards on six catches. DB Trey Miller had a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Matchup to Watch: The Bulldogs ran for just 67 total rushing yards versus Newman Smith, while Prosper held Keller to just 42 yards on the ground. If North cannot run the football versus the stout Eagle defense, it could be a long night for the Bulldogs.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: McKinney North High School

Mustangs Notes: MCA opened with a 55-27 loss to Garland Christian. … QB Jacob Weiderman had a 12.5 completion percentage, throwing for just 8 yards and tossing two interceptions. RB Connor Doyle ran the ball 36 times for a game-high 240 yards, including three touchdowns. RB Montana Brock ran for 91 yards and a touchdown. … The 35-point second quarter for Garland Christian proved to be too much for the Mustangs to overcome, despite the 401 total rushing yards in the game. MCA were victims of a blocked punt and an interception both returned for touchdowns in the quarter.

First Baptist Notes: First Baptist beat Wortham 52-0 in its opener. … QB Max Partlo threw for 335 yards on 17 of 30 passing, slinging six touchdowns and zero interceptions. RB Josh Johnson led the team in rushing with 58 yards, while RB Jeremy Brooks ran for a score of his own. WR Trae Hart caught 10 passes for 187 yards, including three touchdowns. WR Garrett Black, Johnson, and Brooks each caught a touchdown.

Matchup to Watch: While Wortham wasn’t able to do much on offense versus First Baptist, they could only muster 58 rushing yards in the game. MCA lives and dies with their ground attack, so it will be interesting to see if FBU can keep the Mustang rushing attack under wraps.
