This Week In Football: North Faces Royse City In District 13-4A Home Opener

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

TSB looks at this week’s varsity football games in McKinney:

ROYSE CITY (1-0, 1-3) VS. MCKINNEY NORTH (0-1, 0-4)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Ron Poe Stadium

Bulldogs Notes: North lost its District 13-4A opener at Sherman 45-21 last Friday night… The Bulldogs are scoring just over 17 points per game while allowing nearly 35 PPG… Tre Sanders was the top offensive performer at Sherman, catching three passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns… The Bulldogs sacked Sherman quarterback Dru Smith five times… North is one of four teams in the district with zero wins on the season, including Denison, Greenville, and Wylie… Royse City will be the team’s district home opener and the third overall home game of the season… The Bulldogs have been outscored 73-31 at Ron Poe Stadium.

Royse City Notes: The Bulldogs won their district home opener versus Greenville 21-10 on Friday night… Royse City went winless in non-district play, losing at home to North Forney and on the road at Forney and Prestonwood Christian… Quarterback Jackson Watts is 35-of-64 on the season, throwing for 285 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions… The Bulldogs offensive line is anchored by tackle Alfred Haumpy, who is one of the biggest players in the district at 6-feet-4-inches, 295 pounds… Royse City is scoring just 9.2 points per game while allowing 27.5 PPG… Friday night’s win versus Greenville was the first game in which the Bulldogs got into double digits in points.

Matchup to Watch: In the battle of the Bulldogs, McKinney North needs a win to get the ball rolling in 2012. Quarterback Ben Dutze and running back Trey Smith could have a big night if they come out and establish the run game, as Royse City has allowed 239.8 yards a game on the ground. Royse City is one of several dark horses in this district, but if North has playoff aspirations this season, this is a game at home that it needs desperately.

WACO TEXAS CHRISTIAN (0-4) AT MCKINNEY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (1-3)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: McKinney North H.S.

Mustangs Notes: MCA is coming off of a bye in week four… In week three, the Mustangs lost at home to Fort Worth Temple Christian 28-23… Running back Connor Doyle continues to have a terrific start to the season, racking up a total of 669 rushing yards on 88 carries and 10 touchdowns… MCA is scoring 27 points per game and allowing 31 PPG.

Waco Texas Christian Notes: W.T.C. lost last Friday night at Frost 66-6… This will be the fourth away game for the Stars… They have lost their road games by a combined score of 169-12… W.T.C. has been shut out twice.

MCKINNEY BOYD and MCKINNEY have a bye.
