This Week In Football: MHS Looks To Improve To 3-0 as Boyd, North Play For First Win

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

TSB looks at this week’s varsity football games in McKinney:

MCKINNEY HIGH (2-0) vs. IRVING NIMITZ (1-1)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Irving Schools Stadium

Lions Notes: MHS has scored points in all eight quarters it has played this season… This will be the first 5A opponent the Lions have faced in 2012… Through two games the Lions have averaged 513 yards of offense while giving up an average of 459 yards… The Lions are averaging almost nine yards a rush… Wide receiver T.V. Williams has had two touchdowns in both games this season… Currently tied with Allen, Plano, and Plano East for best overall record in District 10-5A at 2-0.

Irving Nimitz Notes: The Vikings suffered a 67-17 defeat on the road to Arlington Lamar a week after they defeated North Garland at home 44-14… They finished 2-8 last season in District 6-5A… Nimitz is not projected as a playoff team… Sophomore quarterback Jimmy Clark has thrown for 280 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions… Running back Kenneth Carpenter leads the team with 88 yards and three touchdowns… On defense, linebacker Greg Carter in a former defensive end who is able to rush the passer and is an above average run stopper. He led the team with six sacks a season ago at the DE position.

Matchup to Watch: The key battle for the Lions won’t be against the Vikings but rather with themselves. With an impressive 2-0 start under their belt, can this young MHS squad succeed with increasing expectations put upon it? A 3-0 start to the season is not out of the picture, but a second win on the road against their first 5A opponent will raise the stakes even higher for these Lions for the remainder of the season.

MCKINNEY BOYD (0-2) vs. GARLAND (0-2)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Garland’s Williams Stadium

Broncos Notes: The Broncos have been held to less than 250 total yards in both games this season. They only amassed 193 total yards a week ago at Coppell… In two games Boyd has 18 first downs and 13 penalties… Running back Bryan Driskell is averaging 7.5 yards a carry on the ground… Boyd has punted six times in both contests… They have given up an average of 246 rushing yards… The Broncos are playing their third straight projected playoff team… Garland defeated Boyd 31-10 at Ron Poe Stadium last year in district play.

Garland Notes: The Owls lost to Mesquite Horn on the road last week 42-0. They lost in week zero to Plano East 35-20 on the road. This is the first home game for Garland… They were only able to gain three first downs last week versus Horn and were held to 107 total yards of offense… Quarterback Carvontez Gates threw for just 67 yards versus Horn. A week before, QB V.J. Gates was 9-of-23 passing for 135 yards with two touchdowns and a interception versus Plano East… The Owls’ top playmaker is wide receiver Ja’Taveon Green, who has been held without a touchdown through two games but caught four a season ago… Most scouts compliment this team’s overall speed at key positions, including a linebacker corps that can make some plays stopping the run.

Matchup to Watch: Garland running back E’Lon Green could have a big day versus a front seven of Boyd that has given up a 100-yard rusher in back-to-back games. Green leads the Owls with 161 rushing yards this season, but Gates and Jaharrad Haskins are also threats to run the ball. Overall, with both of these defenses vulnerable to the big plays, this could be a high-scoring affair in a rematch of former district rivals.

MCKINNEY NORTH (0-2) vs. FRISCO CENTENNIAL (2-0)

When: Friday, 7:00 p.m.

Where: Ron Poe Stadium, McKinney

Bulldogs Notes: North suffered a tough 31-10 defeat to Prosper last Friday night at home to fall to 0-2 this season… The combined records of North’s first three opponents, Newman Smith, Prosper, and Centennial, is 6-0… Quarterback Ben Dutze has had two interceptions in both games… Running back Trey Smith has still not run for over 100 yards and has yet to score a touchdown this season… The Bulldogs have allowed four scoring plays of 30 yards or more… They have given up points in each of their last six quarters… North has to hope that the wind has died down since last Friday night, when the Bulldogs were the victims to receiving an 81-yard punt while only kicking a six yarder one series later.

Frisco Centennial Notes: According to Texashsfootball.com, the Titans are a top-40 team in the state… Centennial is in District 9-4A with Prosper High School… They defeated Lake Dallas 42-14 last week at home, while knocking off Denison 45-9 on the road in week zero… At quarterback is Lamar Jordan, who has thrown for 373 yards and four touchdowns this season while completing nearly 65 percent of his passes. He is regarded as one of the top returning signal callers in the area… Running back Chris Johnson leads the team in rushing with 192 yards and is tied with Jordan for the team lead with two rushing touchdowns… The Titans spread the ball around on offense, with Kelly Cordova, Jacob Atchley, and Stoney Hawkins all having over 100 yards receiving. Atchley leads the team with three touchdowns… The combined record of their opponents played is 1-3.

Matchup to Watch: Let’s see how this Bulldog defense matches up against another explosive aerial offense after allowing 174 yards and three touchdowns to Prosper’s Torii Hunter Jr. last week. They will need a big game from defensive back Evan Jones as well as defensive tackle Eric Mills if North has a legitimate chance to knock off one of the best 4A team’s in the state.

MCKINNEY CHRISTIAN (0-2) vs. LUTHERAN (0-2)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Lutheran

Mustangs Notes: MCA lost its home opener 41-7 versus First Baptist after losing the first game of the season 55-27 to Garland Christian… The Mustangs did not have as much success on the ground versus First Baptist as they did versus Garland Christian. They were held to just 118 rushing yards on 35 attempts, after gaining 401 yards on 62 attempts the week before… Running back Connor Doyle leads the team with 299 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He has scored 70 percent of the Mustangs’ points.

Lutheran Notes: The Lions have not scored a point so far this season. They lost 40-0 on the road to Frisco Legacy Christian in week zero and 56-0 at Fort Worth Calvary Christian last week… All 96 points have been scored in the first half. Versus Legacy, the Lions were held to -3 total yards… Quarterback Jack Sommerfield has thrown seven interceptions and only completed 38% of his passes.

Matchup to Watch: With two teams without a win in 2012, something has to give. If the Mustangs can put together an offensive flow and get Doyle going early, Lutheran doesn’t have the manpower to put together huge spurts of offense.
