TSB looks at this week’s varsity football games in McKinney:
ALLEN (3-0, 7-1) AT MCKINNEY HIGH (1-2, 5-3)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
Lions Notes: MHS lost 64-36 at Plano West last week to drop to 1-2 in District 10-5A. The Lions are currently tied for the fourth playoff spot with Plano West, who has the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Lions… The Lions 515 total offensive yards was the fourth time the offense has gained over 500 yards this season, (Mansfield Legacy, Irving Nimitz, Denton Ryan)… MHS allowed 690 total yards to Plano West, the most the Lions have allowed all season… The Lions defense allowed three touchdown plays of 40-plus yards versus Plano West, (40, 80, and 79)… The Lions have the top ranked offense in District 10-5A and are fifth in total offense in the 5A area, averaging 477.8 YPG. They are the only team in district with over 2,000 yards passing, (2,354)… The offense is last in District 10-5A in rushing yards per game with 183.5, but first in passing yards per game with 294.3… MHS scores 36.5 points per game, second in district behind Allen at 39.5 PPG… MHS is fourth in District 10-5A in total defense, allowing 384.8 YPG. They are fourth in scoring defense at 30.1 PPG… In district play, the Lions offense has passed for 317.7 YPG and rushed for 109.7 YPG. On defense, they have allowed 206 YPG rushing and 240.7 YPG passing… The Lions average district score is 27-38… McKinney is 2-1 at Ron Poe Stadium this year.
Allen Notes: The Eagles defeated McKinney Boyd 34-7 last Friday night at Ron Poe Stadium… Allen improved to 3-0 in District 10-5A and is the only team to have clinched a playoff spot. They can clinch the district championship with a win and a Boyd and Plano loss… Quarterback Kyler Murray is 75-of-108 passing for 916 yards this season, with six touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has 477 rushing yards on 65 carries with a team-high nine rushing touchdowns… The Eagles have outscored their district opponents 137-32 through the first three games… Allen’s only loss of the season was on the road at Coppell. They are 3-1 away from home this season… The Eagles are first in rushing in District 10-5A, averaging 261.1 YPG, which is good for eighth best in the 5A area… They are first in district and 12th in the area in scoring offense with 39.5 PPG… Allen’s defense is first in district and 13th in the area, allowing just 291.5 YPG. They are third in the area in scoring defense, allowing just 14.1 PPG.
Matchup to Watch: The Lions have had a pretty remarkable season up to this point, but they will need some unbelievable things to happen over the next two weeks to steal one of the three remaining playoff spots in District 10-5A. The scenarios are almost mind numbing to try and figure out at this point, but they can put themselves in a much better position by taking care of top-ten Allen on Friday night. After taking care of Boyd pretty easily, the Eagles have shown that it is they and then everyone else in this district. Allen likes to run the football, and the 39th ranked rushing defense in the 5A area of the Lions will be tested this week. Also, can the speed of the Lions perimeter players match the speed of the Allen defensive secondary? This is the kind of game McKinney wanted to be playing when they talked back in August to the media. If they can pull off this upset, it will go down as one of the greatest in school history.
MCKINNEY BOYD (2-1, 5-3) AT PLANO EAST (0-3, 4-3)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Murphy’s Kimbrough Stadium
Broncos Notes: Boyd lost 34-7 at home versus Allen last Friday to drop to 2-1 in District 10-5A… The Broncos need one more win in their final two games to clinch a playoff spot… The Bronco offense finished with more passing yards than rushing yards versus Allen, the first time that has happened this season. Running back Bryan Driskell was held to 29 yards rushing on 17 carries, the lowest of the season… Boyd has scored just 22 points in its last eight quarters on offense since putting up 55 points versus Plano West in week six… The Broncos are last in District 10-5A in total offense, averaging 329.8 YPG. They have the third best rushing offense in the district and the 18th best in the 5A area, averaging 235.4 YPG. Through the air, Boyd is last with 94.8 YPG and the only team not ranked in the top-40 in the area… The Broncos are one of three teams in District 10-5A to be ranked in the top-40 in the area in both rushing and passing defense. They are 39th in rushing yards allowed at 204.1 YPG and tied for 37th in the area with Sachse is passing yards allowed at 161 YPG… In three district games, Boyd has scored 25.7 PPG and allowed 25.3 PPG… They average .7 turnovers in district play and average three takeaways a game… Driskell remained in second place in the 5A area rushing title race, sitting at 1,290 yards on 173 carries. South Garland’s Marquel McNac is in first with 1,443 yards on 214 carries… Boyd is 3-1 on the road this season.
Plano East Notes: The Panthers lost their third consecutive district game last Friday, falling to Plano 42-12… Plano East is now 0-3 in District 10-5A and needs to win its final two games to remain in playoff contention… In three district games versus Allen, MHS, and Plano, the Panthers have been outscored 122-24… Since taking over for starting quarterback Mario Smalls, Taylor McGehee is 24-of-49 passing for 287 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions… Ricky Ilodianya has 478 rushing yards on 80 carries with team-high eight touchdowns. He also has 216 receiving yards on 20 receptions with two touchdowns… Plano East is third in total offense in District 10-5A, averaging 421.4 YPG. They are fourth in rushing with 221.3 PYG and third in passing with 200.1 YPG, both in the top-25 in the 5A area… On defense, the Panthers are last in the district allowing 430.9 YPG. They have allowed 273.9 YPG on the ground this season in only seven games, last in the district. They are third in the district and 33rd in the area in passing defense, allowing 157 YPG… The Panthers are 1-2 at home this season, both losses coming in district play.
Matchup to Watch: What looked like a promising season for Plano East that would include a deep playoff run has diminished more and more every week. The Panthers are on the ropes and can’t have another loss, making them a scary team to face this week. Boyd came up well short at home last week versus Allen in the battle for first place, but need just one more victory over either Plano East or McKinney to lock up a playoff spot. After a rough night on the ground, Driskell should have a huge day versus this Panther rushing defense. The Broncos need their running game to be successful in order to win football games, especially as the playoffs start to approach. Boyd head coach Don Drake said after the Allen loss that he does not want to have a playoff spot on the line when the two McKinney schools meet up on November 9th, so look for a highly-motivated Bronco team this week.
Other District 10-5A Game to Watch:
Plano West (1-2, 4-4) at Plano (2-1, 5-3) – Friday, 7:30 p.m.
MCKINNEY NORTH (2-3, 2-6) AT WYLIE EAST (4-1, 6-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Wylie Stadium
Bulldogs Notes: North defeated Greenville 31-6 last week on the road to improve to 2-3 in District 13-4A… In five district games, North has rushed for 187.8 YPG and passed for 132.4 YPG… North scores 24.8 PPG in district play while allowing 25.6 PPG… The Bulldogs have averaged nine penalties a game in district play for 66.8 yards… On defense, they have allowed 195.8 YPG through the air and 168.8 YPG on the ground… Friday’s win at Greenville was the first game the Bulldogs have scored in all four quarters of the game… Quarterback Ben Dutze surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on Friday. He is now 94-of-191 passing for 1,003 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions… Both Ronald Jones and Justin Jones ran for over 100 yards versus Greenville. Justin leads the team with 417 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Ronald is second with 276 yards and three touchdowns… North is 1-3 on the road this season.
Wylie East Notes: The Raiders defeated Royse City 56-14 on the road last week to improve to 4-1 in District 13-4A… With a win versus North, they would clinch the third playoff spot in district… Wylie East has scored at least 38 points in all five district games this season. They have averaged 47.8 PPG on offense in District 13-4A play… Quarterback Garrett McCain is 134-of-237 passing for 2,153 yards with 27 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has 517 rushing yards on 102 carries with one touchdown… Receiver Matcell Ateman has 1,009 receiving yards on 52 receptions with 15 touchdowns, the most in the 4A area… Running back Jabari Anderson has 1,103 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns… The Raiders have scored less than 34 points only once this season, (vs. Frisco Liberty)… Wylie East is 3-1 at home this season.
Matchup to Watch: Wylie East has one of the most explosive offenses in the 4A area, and the Bulldog defense will be put to the test early and often. The Bulldogs can’t afford a loss with just two games remaining in the season, so Friday’s game at Wylie East is by far the biggest of the season and will determine how important the season finale versus Denison becomes. A North loss means both Wylie schools will make the playoffs, but a road victory over the Raiders, regardless of the outcome of Wylie-Sherman, puts the Bulldogs within one game of a berth with one game left. Ronald and Justin Jones need huge games on the ground to allow Dutze to have some shots down the field, but if the Raiders are able to jump out to a multiple touchdown advantage early in the first half, North may not have enough fire power to overcome the deficit.
Other District 13-4A Game to Watch:
Wylie (3-2, 3-5) at Sherman (4-1, 6-2) – Friday, 7:30 p.m.
GAINESVILLE STATE SCHOOL (0-3, 0-7) AT MCKINNEY CHRISTIAN (0-2, 3-5)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: McKinney North
Mustangs Notes: MCA lost to Frisco Legacy Christian 17-10 last week to drop to 0-2 in District TAPPS 2-III… Quarterback Dallas Brock is 40-of-83 passing for 702 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions… Connor Doyle has 964 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns. He also has 325 receiving yards on 18 receptions with two touchdowns… The Mustangs have been outscored 64-14 in two district games… MCA is 1-3 at home this season.
Gainesville State School Notes: G.S.S lost to Flower Mound Coram Deo Academy 48-14 last week to fall to 0-3 in District TAPPS 2-III… This is the final district game of the season for G.S.S… They have been outscored 158-22 in district play… G.S.S. is 0-5 on the road this season.
