The Survivor Hangs On … Hollie Reaches Idol’s Final 5

By Steve Kirk, TSB Editor

We can officially call her a survivor now, correct?

McKinney’s most famous 18-year-old, Hollie Cavanagh, lived to talk about another “bottom two” scare on American Idol on Thursday night — her second in two weeks — and moved on to the Final 5 contestants of the hit Fox TV show.

“After an incredible 58 million votes,” said host Ryan Seacrest, as Hollie and Elise Testone stood at center stage, “the person who leaves the competition tonight is … Elise.”

Hollie was in the same position last week, when popular pop singer Colton Dixon went home and Hollie again breathed a deep sigh of relief. And Hollie has also spent several weeks in the bottom three, which is always announced first each week before Seacrest sends one of them back to safety.

Cavanagh sang Queen’s Save Me and Miley Cyrus’ The Climb on Wednesday’s live show. If you missed our story of the judges’ reactions to her performance — not to mention a video and some pictures from the TSB Watch Party — then you can click here.

To find out her fate, Hollie was called to center stage with her best Idol buddy, the soulful Joshua Ledet. While Ledet was sent to safety, Hollie was sent to the “bottom three” chairs to join Testone. They would soon be joined by Skylar Laine.

Shortly thereafter, Skylar was sent back to the couches, leaving only Hollie and Elise.

“I wonder if Hollie choosing the song Save Me by Queen was a subconscious plea to the public,” Idol coach Jimmy Iovine said. “She did a very good job. This was a hard one. Freddie Mercury is tough. … Technically she was a B-plus.”

As for The Climb, Iovine called it a great choice. “I loved that,” he said. “I thought she caught the emotion of the song. I thought that was as well as Hollie could do. I hope it’s not too little, too late.”

Not for this week.

The survivor lives on.
