On Sunday, May 6, The Samaritan Inn will be hosting a dedication ceremony to officially open its new outdoor basketball court, conveniently located on the south side of the Administration Building of the Inn. This court has been built specifically for use by the residents of the Inn. Named the Justin & Brian Barth Recreation Center, this basketball court is truly a gesture of brotherly love.
The generous financial contribution that provided this court was delivered to the Inn by Kary Barth, a long-time supporter of The Samaritan Inn. The check she delivered was signed by her son Brian and was in memory of his brother Justin who passed away in November after a two-year struggle against a rare and terminal cancer. Brian lovingly cared for his brother and ensured that Justin was well cared for, especially as his needs increased dramatically over the course of the illness.
This basketball court is dedicated to Kary’s sons, in memory of Justin and in recognition of Brian who chose to take care of his brother so faithfully. The decision to build the court at the Inn could not be more appropriate, as brother caring for brother is a founding principle of the mission of The Samaritan Inn.
Following the ribbon cutting, there will be an exhibition game to end all exhibitions. This bragging-rights championship game will be captained by two members of The Samaritan Inn’s Board of Directors – Travis Ussery, McKinney City Council and Scott Johnson, Frisco City Council. And, the two referees who will ensure that all the rules are followed to the letter of the law are Chief of Police Greg Rushin and Assistant Chief of Police Ed Drain from the Plano Police Department.
Hot dogs and cold drinks will be available thanks to a gracious donation by Crosspoint Church of McKinney. A donation fee of $10 is suggested, with all proceeds benefiting the residents and programs of The Samaritan Inn.
