From Oklahoma to Footloose, local stage star Kayla Perkins has seemingly done it all.
And don’t forget about Sweeney Todd, Seussical, Parade and Phantom of the Opera.
From the age of 5, Kayla began acting, dancing and singing on a regular basis, delivering triple-threat performances that shocked and delighted her hometown of McKinney. Along with another McKinney Star, Michael Williams, Kayla won McKinney Mash-Up last September and was given the opportunity to open on the stage for Taylor Hicks. “I would take a singing career if it came to me, but my true love is musical theatre,” Kayla said. “I don’t want to be cliché, but I don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t doing musical theatre.”
As a recent graduate of McKinney Boyd High School, Kayla has performed in more than 40 productions and is well on her way to a big future.
That future will begin this fall at Texas State University in San Marcos, wher Kayla plans to major in musical theatre. Her dream includes a move to New York after graduation to begin auditioning. She starts this college journey with a confidence gained from the DSM High School Musical Awards, where she was nominated along with Boyd students, Riley McRae, Max Hodde, and Michael Williams.
“I got out of the car and was walking down the red carpet,” Kayla said. “There were all these people with cameras and I just thought, this is something I could do for the rest of my life.”
With her experience and her natural talent Kayla is a shoe-in for the next generation of Broadway stars, so keep your eyes open. Before we all know it Kayla might be the one nominated for a Tony Award.
