`The Art of Postcards’ Exhibit Opening

Submitted by Collin County Historical Society

Visit the Collin County Historical Society and museum during our new exhibit, ‘The Art of Postcards,’ and see why postcard collecting became the greatest collectible hobby the world has ever known.

Even more important, 112 years of history can be tracked through postcards depicting art, historical buildings, noteworthy people, places, historical events and much more. Changes in our laws of 1907, allowing pictures on the front and a divided back for notes and addresses, helped bring in the golden age of postcards. While the population of the United States hovered at close to 89,000,000 in 1908, our Post Office cited 677,777,798 postcards mailed in their fiscal year ending June 30.

During this time, prolific postcard artists moved to Germany where printing methods were the best in the world. These ‘art cards’ exhibited the finest artwork and brightest colors offered. To better understand their popularity, think of these cards as original high quality prints rather than postcards.

Visit our exhibit May 11, 12 and May 18, 19 from 11-4 and see examples of the different eras of post cards as well as cameras of the day. Find out what factors contributed to the swift end of the post card hobby craze. This is a great way to spend Mother’s Day weekend.

We are located at 300 E. Virginia St., McKinney. All new 2012 members get in free! Adults $7, Veterans and seniors $5, and children $3
