Foie Gras for Thanksgiving?
by Bryan Criswell
Growing up in Maryland with many traditional Thanksgiving feasts, including as much turkey, stuffing and family fun that could be had, I never imagined that my best Thanksgiving Day celebration wouldn’t even be in the US. In an uncharacteristic spontaneous move, I asked a special someone that I had just met a few months earlier to forgo our family celebrations and come with me for a romantic getaway.
Before we knew it, we were on a plane headed to Paris with complimentary glasses of champagne offered to us by the flight attendant. When we landed on Thanksgiving morning, it felt strange to be in a place that didn’t celebrate the holiday and, although our dinner celebration consisted foie gras, steak tartare, croissants, and crepes, we felt at home since our American friends joined us for dinner.
During the rest of the trip, we experienced all the famous sites, including a ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower and were not surprised at how beautiful the City of Lights can be. I always felt this trip was beginning of something special and it definitely illuminated something in me.
That Thanksgiving Day marked the beginning of an amazing relationship and I’m happy to say that seven years later, a wonderful wedding day, and many adventures after, it just keeps getting better!
