Voted one of the top 5 places to live in America by Money Magazine in 2010, McKinney has a population of 131,117 and many of us are teenagers. This raises a good question: Within our 58.5 miles of land, what is there for a teenager to in McKinney?
We find more around here than you might think.
At Towne Lake across from McKinney High School teens always enjoy playing sand volleyball with friends. Usually, we will get a big group of people together and just play for fun or compete and make the loser buy everyone Sonic drinks. At the park you can also walk and talk or play on the jungle gym; even at 17 I know I’m not too old for that! They also have paddle boats where up to four people can ride around the lake in a
duck shaped boat. It’s always fun, but it is also an intense leg workout!
Across from Towne Lake, Cinemark Movies 14 is always a fun place to watch the newest movies and since it is cheaper than most other theaters, us teens that are always in a budget crunch can still enjoy the new releases. After the movies, most people walk over to Culvers across the parking lot and enjoy ice cream and fries while chatting after a movie.
Just across the highway are the Nora Haney soccer fields where people like to get a group of friends together to kick the ball around whenever the recreational teams are not using the fields. On the other side of the soccer fields is the ever so popular disc golf course. Disc golf is a game that combines basketball and golf. The object of our game is to get the disc into the correct numbered basket as fast as you can without having to throw the Frisbee more than three times. Disc golf is popular all year round and everyone loves getting a group together to play. It’s always hilarious to watch people like me, that never seem to be able to get the disc into the basket no matter how many times they try.
Fishing is another activity that is becoming more people among young adults. There are multiple ponds all over McKinney where people can fish. For example, there are ponds on the trail where the Eldorado Country Club golfers play and people are always fishing with a few friends and some snacks. Even though you have to throw you catch back it is still fun to do something more relaxing on the weekends.
In the fall, almost every Friday night is dedicated to football games. Weather it’s McKinney High, Boyd, or North every Friday night at Ron Poe Stadium is usually filled with football fans cheering on their teams. After the games, football players, cheerleaders, and fans all like to go out to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings or Whataburger to celebrate after the games.
Whataburger, Sauce, Sonic, Scotty P’s, Panera, Spoons, McAllister’s, Genghis Grill, Steak n’ Shake, Chipotle, Christina’s, Sho Guns, and Palios are just a few local restaurants where teens like to eat. Food is always plentiful and whenever you want to go out to eat with friends there are endless options of great places to eat. It is always a blast to get a group of girls together and dress up to go out to dinner and enjoy a night out at
Pei Wei or even have a date night at Chilis.
Just off Highway 5 is the Herd Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary. The museum offers a great variety of nature trails, a ropes course, exhibits, a native plant garden, and other attractions that are always a exciting to visit with friends when you have some free time on the weekend.
You can see there a few things to do around McKinney, but things do get old. Sometimes we all go out to Frisco to the mall, or Allen for the outlet mall, or Plano to Main Event for bowling and laser tag.
We love McKinney and all, but sometimes it is nice to get out and do something different.
