Teen Talk: Four Local High School Students Make a Movie

By Christine Baker, TSB Contributor

At the age of 18 most teens are suffering from Senioritis and taking a break before college.

Not for McKinney High students Jacob Derryberry, Dan Jarvis, Matt Farmer and Jed Rollins. They have begun the process of creating a feature length film, “Wing.”

The film is described as “a loner’s journey.” It is about a boy named Wing who is a 19-year-old high school dropout who’s been through it all, including the odd job of illegally trafficking cigarettes to minors. Wing treads through his days dealing with his inane boss (Andrew Shafer), pubescent children, and a strange immigrant friend (Jashan Mahal), who might be the most ground shaking force for Wing.

“We were always watching movies, I mean, we’d be at the theatre at least once or twice a week,” Farmer said. “There were so many movies that we’d leave saying ‘Wow, I could’ve done that.’ After a while I guess it sort of just dawned on us that we should actually do it and stop whining about other films.”

The group wants to submit the film to Sundance after its completion. The four guys are co-founders of Wolfport Films. “Wing” is their first full length movie, and their production began earlier this month. The movie will be produced completely by the founders and the music will all be from nearby bands in Denton, Dallas, and Ft. Worth.

“Well, Matt and I had always loved making shirt videos for the web in out broadcasting class but we had never tried anything at this scale,” Derryberry said. “I mean we both loved film and wanted to pursue this dream so we began writing a short film. Quickly the film developed into a full blown feature and by this time we had brought Dan in to be the director of cinematography and really have an artistic take on the film.”

All four contributors to this film attend McKinney High School and are very involved in the Pacemaker award-winning MHS1 broadcasting program. The co-founders of Wolfport Films include Derryberry (Director and writer), Farmer (Writer and director), Jarvis (Director of cinematography), and Rollins (Executive producer).

“The hardest part from where I sit, as executive producer, is the same thing that strikes all independent films… budget,” Rollins said. “It’s a fun challenge to make a stunning film on a small budget because you really get to rely on your skills and relationships.”

Of course, a film such as this requires some extra cash. But the guys have made a goal of $5,000 that they wish to get through donations from supporters. The money will cover the costs of essential equipment, renting, and production costs/costumes. As of several days ago, the project has successfully raised $7,001 from 66 supporters.

“Experience is something that I want to get out of this,” Jarvis said. “I am not doing it to become famous or anything. I’m just doing it for the experience and to get my name out there.”

I have gone to school with all four of these talented guys for quite some time now. And take it from me when I say they know what they’re doing and anything they do will be spectacular and professional. Each guy is qualified and dedicated for any film project and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. For more updates follow them on the film’s Facebook, Twitter and website.

So, what’s the best part of this film?

“Well I don’t want to give anything away,” Farmer said. “But I think by far my favorite scene is the roller skating race. There’s just so much chaos and hilarious stuff going on, I think that even if it weren’t my own film I’d pee myself.”
