The suspect in an inappropriate contact incident that took place in August at Wal-Mart on Redbud Trail and Highway 380 has been found guilty of assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanor. The victim of the assault spoke to TownSquareBuzz.com and confirmed that the suspect was found guilty on Tuesday and fined $350. The maximum allowable fine was $500.
The victim, a 27-year-old woman from Anna, told TSB that she’s “glad to have it done and behind me.” She complimented the city’s prosecutors and police for pursuing the case. “They made it an airtight case,” she said. But she also said she wished the punishment could have been more severe.“I don’t really feel like he was held accountable. He was just fined.”
The victim spoke to TSB when the incident initially took place in August. She said that a teenage male groped her buttocks as she walked through the Wal-Mart store on a Saturday afternoon. After she confronted the male, he ran out of the store. The suspect is underage; therefore his identity is not being made public.
The victim also told TSB that during the trial, the suspect’s mother told the judge that her son accidentally made contact with the victim. She allegedly said her son “tripped (into the woman) because he’d just gone through a growth spurt and his feet went from size 10 to size 14.”
She said that she reached out to TSB to spread the word about what happened to her in the hopes of preventing anyone else becoming a victim of a similar incident. When the suspect was charged, she told TSB, “If someone else is able to be more aware, then that’s great.”
But now that the trial is complete, she expressed doubt that this will be the last time the suspect is involved in something like this. “The judge didn’t make him apologize,” she said. “I was sitting right back there. I will not be surprised if this happens again.”
