McKinney Police have identified and charged a suspect in an inappropriate contact incident that took place in August at Wal-Mart on Redbud Trail and Highway 380.
Sergeant Chad Barker of the McKinney Police told TownSquareBuzz.com that the investigation into the inappropriate contact incident is complete and has been forwarded to the Municipal Courts for prosecution.
The suspect has been charged with Assault by Contact, a Class C Misdemeanor. The suspect is a minor; therefore McKinney PD will not be releasing his name. According to the Attorney General of Texas, “Assault by Contact, a Class C misdemeanor, is committed when a person intentionally or knowingly physically touches another knowing the victim will regard the contact as offensive or provocative.”
The victim, a 27-year-old woman from Anna, contacted TSB shortly after the incident took place to share the details in the hope that others could avoid a similar fate. She told TSB that a teenage male groped her buttocks as she walked through the Wal-Mart store on a Saturday afternoon. After she confronted the male, he ran out of the store.
“If someone else is able to be more aware, then that’s great,” she told TSB after learning that the suspect had been identified and charged. “And if that kid is able to have some consequences, then that’s good too. Hopefully I could have stopped something worse from happening to someone else.”
Shortly after the incident, the woman told TSB that she had been unable to go anywhere by herself. On Wednesday, she told TSB that she has begun to visit stores by herself again, but “I always look over my shoulder now” and that she now carries pepper spray with her.
If the suspect is found guilty, he faces a fine of up to $500.
