Stuart J’s Lens: Teacher Matt Nix’s Singer-Songwriter Talents Encouraged By Students

by Stuart J. Pearlman, TSB Staff

While teaching at McKinney High School a couple of years ago, Matt Nix knew to do whatever it takes to keep kids motivated. To that end, it was not uncommon for him to break out his guitar and start singing songs about math.

“The hardest part I feel like about this job,” he said, “you’ve got 100 kids and each one of them is motivated by something different. You’re selling yourself. You’re not really selling math.”

No doubt the students enjoyed the math lessons but at the same time they began to encourage their teacher to pursue a side career in music.

“Kids kinda forced me into it,” Nix said. “They’re like, ‘Well why don’t you play like elsewhere beside teaching? You’re a pretty good teacher but a really good singer‘.”

With that Nix started hitting some “open MIC” nights and was seen by a radio personality who talked him into entering a competition. Before he knew it, the Matt Nix Band was formed.

Now at Melissa High School, Nix has taught and coached for six years. Helping and working with young people will always be his top priority but he is having a lot of fun with music on the side.

“I enjoy getting up in front of people and playing and having a good time,” he said. “And hopefully they are enjoying the music.”

Matt sings a bit in the video above. If you want to hear the entire song he wrote for his son, “The One That Holds Your Hand”, click the video below. And be sure to check out the Matt Nix Band website for concert information.
