When you talk to Roy Garcia Sr. you can’t help but smile, probably because he is always smiling, if not with his mouth then with his eyes.
Roy and his wife Sara moved to McKinney from Mississippi to see their grandchildren grow up after Roy retired. He taught and coached at all levels for 43 years in the Mississippi school system.
“She gave up her career so I could get my degree,” said Garcia of his wife. “When I was in seventh grade I knew I wanted to be a coach.”
Garcia grew up learning a solid work ethic from his parents and carries that ethic into retirement.
“I’ve had too many people, friends, who retired and watched TV and two years later they’re gone,” he said.
Garcia fills his time at the McKinney Senior Center, running the food pantry for the local office of the Salvation Army and volunteering at Finch Elementary School as a Mentor, PE teacher and Art class assistant. Recently he was recognized by McKinney ISD as the first ever recipient of the Joellyn Smith Volunteer of the Year Award.
“Roy is a gift for MISD,” said Nancy Cowlishaw, MISD Coordinator of Partners in Education. “His smile and enthusiasm is contagious. Roy brings joy into the lives of many children.”
“I love to help people,” said Garcia. “Especially students cause, man, they need that love and care.”
