Stuart J’s Lens: Beth Shumate is No `Visitor’ in McKinney

By Stuart J. Pearlman, TSB Staff

If you ever need to know what is going on around McKinney you can check right here on or you could check with the local authority, Beth Shumate. Beth is the Communications Manager at the McKinney Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (MCVB) and she is in touch with it all.

Shumate grew up in Arkansas, played the french horn in band and became a journalist. Her first job was writing for a local newspaper, “in little tiny Arkadelphia,” she said. (She even covered a couple of murder trials.)

After moving to Texas and becoming the mother of three boys, Shumate settled into a life filled with work she “could do from home.” Then she found her dream job at MCVB in 2007.

Once settled in McKinney, Beth became the consummate “Baseball Mom” and rediscovered her musical roots through the McKinney Community Band. She loves her city and is constantly on-the-go with happenings and events around town. Her hope is that her boys will share that enthusiasm wherever they end up.

“I know when they’re older they’ll appreciate the fact that their mom was involved in the community,” she said, “and maybe that will encourage them to do the same thing.”

If you find yourself in historic downtown McKinney, stop by the new MCVB offices on Virginia just west of Kentucky. Beth will be delighted to share with you what is going on.
