McKinney Boyd alumnus Carson Stepler shot a 35 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine Monday for an opening-round 74 at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.
Stepler, who attends the University of Texas, is competing at the 2013 USGA Amateur Public Links Championship. His former teammate at Boyd, Preston Pearce, who attends the University of Oklahoma, is his caddy this week. Both men graduated in 2012. The heat index reached triple digits in metro Washington DC. But it didn’t bother Eric Sugimoto, who leads the tournament after making five birdies on his opening nine to card a record-tying, 7-under 63. Sugimoto, a rising junior at the University of Pacific, has a two-stroke lead over Garrett Rank and Ian Davis, who shot 5-under 65s, followed by Sam Saunders, who posted a 66.
According to USGA.org, the U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
Golfers will play the second round of stroke-play qualifying Tuesday. The field will then be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play, which begins Wednesday. The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Saturday.
