The most successful season in the history of McKinney Boyd’s volleyball program ended Saturday night in heartbreaking fashion — one win away from a state championship.
Coppell defeated the Lady Broncs 3-1 in the Class 5A finals at Texas State University in San Marcos. Coppell won the match 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19.
Boyd’s talented junior, Megan Mollett, finished with a game-high 27 kills, but Coppell coach Julie Green told the Dallas Morning News that her team’s “balance” provided the difference. Kierra Holst, Chiaka Ogbogu, Cassidy Pickrell and Erica Bohannon all had good matches for Coppell.
Down 2-0 in the best-of-five championship, Boyd won the third set and had regained the momentum. But Coppell did enough to win the fourth set and the championship.
The Lady Broncs, won District 10 and their region, then defeated Houston Cy Falls in the state finals on Friday night. Coach Kelly Quinn’s team had a season to remember.
