McKinney Boyd defeated traditional power and No. 2-ranked Austin Westlake 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 on Saturday in the Class 5A Region II championship match to reach the UIL State Finals for the first time in the program’s short but successful history.
The 5A state tournament is Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19, in San Marcos. The event will take place at Strahan Coliseum on the campus of Texas State University.
Boyd will play Cypress Falls at 5 p.m. Friday in one state semifinal, while Coppell will play San Antonio Johnson at 7 p.m. in the other. The state championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Lady Broncos improved their overall record to 44-6. Coach Kelly Quinn is in her sixth year leading the program, which she has coached since the school opened in 2006.
In the victory over Westlake, Boyd junior Megan Mollett led all performers with 21 kills, while senior Drew Darling added 10.
The Region II semifinals and finals were held in Huntsville at Sam Houston State University. The Lady Broncs had beaten Georgetown in the regional semis on Friday.
