McKinney High 1, Aledo 0: The Lions won their opener Thursday in the Frisco Dr. Pink Invitational. While Aledo (0-1) may not have suited up record breaking running back Johnathan Gray from their State Champion football team, the Bearcats did field a speedy attack which pestered the McKinney Lions (1-0) all game and pushed the Lions defense to the breaking point several times in the second half during the opening battle. But McKinney, with two first year varsity goalkeepers, all first-year varsity defenders and all but three first year varsity midfielders and forwards, somehow kept Aledo off the scoreboard.
And a 15th-minute goal by senior forward and captain JT Hawkin,s assisted by junior Chris Garza, secured the shutout win in gale force winds at Frisco’s Memorial Stadium. Hawkins’ goal came on the heels of a game-ending ankle injury to senior center midfielder Tony Ramos which resulted in junior Tom Navarette’s first career varsity minutes and eventually helped produce a number of close range scoring opportunities for the Lions’ attack the remainder of the match. Senior captain and goalkeeper Chuck Schober and junior Rylan Whan split halves in goal to earn the shutout while 17 of the 22 McKinney players gave the Lions coaching staff a chance to evaluate the 2012 season’s new crop of players.
Tournament play continues Friday for McKinney with a noon kickoff at the soon to be renamed Pizza Hut Park field #3 vs. the TASCO preseason #9 state ranked North Dallas, followed by a 5 p.m. kickoff against talented Frisco Centennial, winners of the inaugural FISD Dr. Pink Pizza Hut Park Tournament in 2006.
