The first weekend of the 2012 UIL soccer season concluded Saturday with local teams in tournament action across the area.
McKinney Boyd 2, Grapevine 2: The Lady Broncos’ Allision Coleman and Caitlyn Heap scored goals as they tied Grapevine in the National Elite Prep Showcase at Fort Worth Nolan. Boyd is 2-0-1 on the young season.
McKinney North 2, Burleson 0: The Lady Bulldogs won this game Friday at the Dr. Pink Invitational.
Frisco Centennial 2, McKinney North 1: Micaela Mendiola scored the Lady Dawgs’ lone goal in this Friday contest.
McKinney 0, Frisco Wakeland 0: For the second time in as many days, the Lions (2-1-1) squared off against a state ranked opponent in the Frisco ISD Dr. Pink Invitational. This time it was No. 6-ranked and 2010 State Champion Frisco Wakeland (2-1-1) to close out the tournament and rebound from Friday evening’s frustrating loss to powerful Frisco Centennial.
The result, despite the scoreless draw, was a game of rousing counterattacking from the Lions, who showed up with renewed energy in their legs and despite having the lesser percentage of possession, created twice as many scoring opportunities as the talented preseason favorites did.
With senior captain and goalkeeper Chuck Schober solid in goal all game — he had six saves — behind the tireless workrate of defenders sophomore Andres Garza, junior Tom Navarette, senior Drew Mills, junior Sean Townsend and midfielders senior captain Tony Ramos, sophomore Jason Horvath, junior Francisco Manzanarez and junior Gerson Mendoza, the Lions smothered waves of attacks from Wakeland in the first half and created several point blank scoring opportunities which Wakeland’s goalkeeper smothered.
The second half produced even a few more one-on-ones and dangerous free kicks around the Wakeland goal area and with the final seconds ticking away, McKinney earned a hard fought shutout against one of the area’s best and nearly stole an unlikely win. Senior captain JT Hawkins earned the honor of an all tourney team selection for his four goals in four games performance.
Next up for MHS is a home subvarsity doubleheader Tuesday night, Jan. 17 against Lovejoy while the varsity Lions recover and train for next week’s Lovejoy tournament as defending champions, kicking off with a noon match against Gainesville on Thursday, Jan. 19, followed by a Friday noon match against Frisco Liberty.
Frisco 2, McKinney North 0: The Bulldogs lost their final game at the Dr. Pink Invitational on Saturday in Frisco. North is 2-2 on the season.
