Soccer Playoffs: TSB Previews Boyd and MHS in 5A Boys Regional Semifinals at Round Rock

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Editor

Then there were two.

After six MISD teams entered the playoff mix weeks ago, only the McKinney Boyd and McKinney High boys remain in the hunt entering Friday’s Regional Semifinal action in Round Rock. What is on the line? A chance to play for the Region II Final on Saturday afternoon to advance to the UIL Soccer State Final next weekend in Georgetown. Below is a preview of Friday’s action on the pitch:

McKinney Boyd vs. The Woodlands
Where: Round Rock’s Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex
When: Friday, 4 p.m.
Round: Regional Semifinal

McKinney Boyd Notes: Defeated Jesuit 2-1 in a 10-9 shootout win in the Regional Quarterfinal round on Tuesday night at Frisco Memorial Stadium… The Broncos defeated The Woodlands 2-1 in the Georgetown Governor’s Cup on Jan. 19. Dillon Farrell and Sewell Yost each scored a goal in the match… Boyd defeated The Woodlands 2-1 in 2012 and lost 3-0 in 2011… This is the first playoff match between the two teams.

The Woodlands Notes: The Highlanders defeated Cedar Ridge 2-0 in two overtimes on Tuesday night to advance to the Regional Semifinals… The Woodlands finished first in District 14-5A… The Highlanders have an overall record of 20-2-3… Miguel Bernardo and Alex Lensing had the two overtime goals in the win over Cedar Ridge on Tuesday night.

What the Match Means: The winner plays the winner of McKinney-Kingwood, which kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m. in Round Rock. If the Broncos and Lions both win, an all-McKinney Region II Final would break out to decide one of the final four spots in the UIL State Final next weekend.

McKinney High vs. Kingwood
Where: Round Rock’s Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex
When: Friday, 6 p.m.
Round: Regional Semifinal

McKinney High Notes: The Lions defeated North Mesquite 1-0 at Ron Poe Stadium on Friday night in the Regional Quarterfinal… MHS has held its first three playoff opponents scoreless, outscoring Skyline, Longview, and N.M 4-0… David Soto scored the lone goal in the win versus North Mesquite, giving him two in the playoffs. Gerson Mendoza has the other two goals… The Lions did not play Kingwood in non-district play.

Kingwood Notes: The Mustangs defeated A&M Consolidated 2-1 after winning the shootout 4-1 on Tuesday night in the Regional Quarterfinals. Kingwood also defeated Bryan and McNeil in earlier round… Kingwood finished first in District 13-5A with a record of 21-1-4. The Mustangs only loss came versus The Woodlands in non-district play, falling 3-1 on Feb. 15… Kingwood has outscored playoff opponents 6-2.

What the Match Means: With McKinney Boyd-The Woodlands playing before the match, both teams will know who their opponent would be if they can win Friday night’s match. The Lions could be playing for a chance to meet up with their crosstown rivals on Saturday afternoon.
