Four MISD soccer teams were in playoff action on Thursday night, as the McKinney Boyd boys and girls teams, the McKinney High boys, and the McKinney North Lady Bulldogs all were looking to advance on to the Regional Quarterfinal round. Below are the scores and recaps from each match:
McKinney Boyd Boys:
The Broncos shut out Mesquite Horn 3-0 at Bronco Field to advance to a 5A Regional Quarterfinal match next week. Boyd improved to 17-5-3 on the season with the victory.
Ben Gupton scored the Broncos first goal in the 46th minute, while Hutt Wiginton added the second goal in the 64th minute. The final goal of the match came in the 75th minute when Dillon Farrell scored on a penalty kick to ice the match for the Broncos.
Evan Davies and Patrick Ladd combined for the shut out in net.
Boyd will play the winner of Dallas Jesuit-Rockwall in the Regional Quarterfinal round. The Jesuit-Rockwall match is scheduled for Friday night at Allen, beginning at 8 p.m.
McKinney High Boys:
The Lions advanced to the 5A Regional Quarterfinal round of the UIL playoffs with a 1-0 victory over Longview on Thursday night at Forney’s City Bank Stadium. MHS improved to 16-3-5 on the season.
Gerson Mendoza scored the lone goal in the match just two minutes into the match to secure the win for the Lions. After Mikie Swim’s corner kick sent the ball into the box, Dante Nunez regained collected the ball and crossed it back in to Chris Garza. Mendoza followed up Garza’s shot with the game-winning goal.
Rylan Whan and Quique Vicens combined for the shutout in net for the Lions. Whan saved six shots in the first half, while Vicens save five in the second.
McKinney will play the winner of North Mesquite-Lake Highlands in the Regional Quarterfinal round. North Mesquite-Lake Highlands is scheduled for Friday night at Wildcat Ram Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m.
McKinney Boyd Girls:
The Lady Broncos season came to an end on Thursday night after falling 3-2 versus Sachse in the 5A Area round match at Plano’s John Clark Stadium.
Boyd trailed 3-0 after three consecutive goals from Sachse freshman Cyera Hintzen before two goals from the Lady Broncos cut the lead to just one.
Boyd finished 15-4-5 on the season and came in second in District 10-5A behind state-ranked Plano West.
