Augie joined the Army Reserve in 2007 and honorably served his country while deployed to Iraq from June 2009 – May 2010. Upon returning stateside, his demobilization hit some major issues as he attempted to transfer from his reserve unit in St. Louis to the reserve unit in Chicago where he was a new student at Wulbur Wright Community College. While traveling to St. Louis over Thanksgiving weekend in 2010 to report for his monthly duties as was necessary to remain in compliance with the Army, SPC Pena stopped to help 20-year old Mary Elbring change tire. Ms. Elbring was stranded on a St. Louis highway in the early morning hours of November 25th, and Augie simply could not ignore her. As he helped her change her tire, a drunk driver slammed into Ms. Elbring’s car which in turn crushed Augie.
Left in critical condition, Augie’s transfer to the Chicago unit was never completed and his status with the Army has been left in limbo. His is now unable to collect disability from the Army as he was technically not on active duty at the time of the accident. Even though Augie is now a paraplegic living in a small apartment with his mother and 10 year old brother, he has an AMAZING positive outlook.
Augie’s family cannot afford this and as of now they have no transportation to get Augie around. They are borrowing a van from a company but this is on a limited bases. Just voting would really change this family’s life.
