Approximately 12,000 fans and breezy blue skies helped create Sunday, May 26, as the perfect setting for Smiles Charity’s sixth annual Memorial Day Weekend concert at the Adriatica outdoor concert venue.
The headlining act was Music Award winner Ryan Star, who put on an electrifying show, with several of his hits, including “Right Now.” Star’s late grandfather had previously served in the Army during WWII, so Ryan was closely connected to Smiles Charity’s mission to build homes for wounded veterans.
Many funds were raised through raffle sales; a 2013 Cadillac ATS was given away with countless other prizes and autographed items. Supporters made donations leading up and as well as at the time of the event . All donations go towards the completion of building a home for the Byers family, who is a disabled veteran. Smiles Charity partnered with Helping A Hero and was privileged to honor the Byers family with the reward of a four bedroom newly built home in McKinney, Texas. Groundbreaking on the Byers home is July 22 and is estimated to be complete by Christmas 2013.
Appearing on stage with Mr. Star was Disney Channel Star Ross Lynch, from the show Austin and Ally, and band R5 along with local favorite the Maylee Thomas Band. Radio Disney AM 620 announced R5 and entertained at the event. Johnny B from 97.5 KLAK was the concerts Emcee and families attending the concert event also enjoyed a flyover by WWII era planes; a kids’ area with bounce houses, games, and activities; local food and drink vendors; and spectacular fireworks display.
The concert event was made possible by title sponsor CrestCars.Com. Top sponsors include Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics, Torchmark Corporation, HCL, Dr. Don Nix Oral Surgery, Simpson Strong-Tie, and 97.5KLAK radio. Their support allowed Smiles Charity to organize the most successful event in its six-year history.
